Dear Parents,

It has been a really excellent week, with over 160 new children joining the school and, of course, plenty of familiar faces returning from the holidays. Firstly, I want to wish all our families a very warm welcome to the new school year. The children are full of enthusiasm, positivity and energy, as they have met their new teachers, made plans for the year ahead and enjoyed being busy! It’s reminded me how important the holidays are – we all need time to recharge and rest before learning something new.

Our assembly series this term focuses on people who have lived inspirational lives. Each week we will find out about a different heroic character and learn from the choices that they made. First though we considered the hero inside each one of us. We remembered how unique each one of us is, and reflected on what makes each one of us special. We challenged each other to be the best we can be – and also thought about how respecting each other makes the world a better place!

The children at the juniors were particularly fortunate on Wednesday when Sophie Bray, one of the gold medal-winning women’s hockey team from the Rio Olympics popped into school to show us her medal! Thanks to Mary’s hockey connections, we were so privileged that Sophie made time to visit. Her story was inspirational and I’m sure it will live long in the memory of many of our children! Seeing and touching a real gold medal was quite an experience – and finding out about the team work involved in getting to the winners’ podium was so inspiring.

I’m looking forward to catching up with you at the “Meet the Team” evenings next week (Tuesday 7pm at the juniors, Thursday 7pm at the infants). Do make this a priority if you can as the teachers achieve so much more when we work together with you in partnership.

Finally, a quick reminder that the children at the juniors may only bring fruit or vegetables for their morning break snacks – it is part of our healthy school initiative, and helps keep the school litter free too.

Parent Governor Election
We currently have two parent governor vacancies on our governing body, and are inviting nominations from parents of pupils at both Holy Trinity and Pewley Down. You should today have received an explanatory letter and nomination form via your child’s book bag, further copies are available from the school offices. Nomination forms must be returned by Monday 26 September.

Pupil Premium / Free School Meals – are you eligible?
Government funding for schools includes factors such as free school meal eligibility – it is not just a matter of meal subsidy. Free school meal registration brings significant funding for the school to support your child’s education in many other ways, through the Pupil Premium scheme and other budget funding factors. In the budget year 2016/17, each pupil eligible for free meals attracts an extra £5,164 in funding to the school (the extra is not ring-fenced to individual pupils, but is a way of funding measures to increase attainment). Even though all children at the infants now receive a free lunch regardless of income, we still need this eligibility information in order to be able to receive the additional funding for this academic year.

If you think you are eligible but have not yet registered, please contact either school office for more information on which benefits qualify. Registration is of course completely confidential.

Admissions 2017 – infant and junior
The date from which parents can apply for a primary school place for Reception and Year 3 has changed to 31 October 2016 (previously 1 September 2016). Applications should be made through the Surrey County Council on-line system (www.sureycc.gov.uk/admissions) or call Surrey on 0300 200 1004 for a paper application. It is very important to apply on time before the deadline of 15 January 2017.

Meet the Team, Juniors Tuesday 13th September, 7.00pm; Infants Thursday 15 September, 7.00pm
We look forward to seeing you all on either Tuesday (Y3-Y6) or Thursday (YR-Y2) when we will be introducing ourselves to you and explaining everything you need to know about your child’s current year group. At the juniors, please use the Cline Road entrance if you need to park and meet at 7pm in the Chapel. At the infants, please go straight to your child’s classroom on arrival. This will be followed by the FOPS AGM at 8.00pm in the hall (see FOPS section below).

Phonics Evening, Wednesday 28 September, 7.00pm at the Infants
Parents in Year R are invited to the Phonics Evening on 28 September. Although this is particularly intended for parents of Year R children, parents in other year groups are very welcome to attend if they would like to.

Year 2 swimming, Wednesday 14 September
Swimming lessons for Year 2 children start next Wednesday. Please ensure that your child brings their swimming kit – towel, swimming costume (no bikinis or baggy shorts), hats for girls and goggles (optional). Ideally this should be in a back pack.

Message Books
If your child is being collected by anyone other than mum or dad, or is attending an after-school club, please note it in the appropriate class Message Book. These are kept on the bench in the front playground by the double doors each morning.

PUPS After-School Club
A reminder to let us know as soon as possible if your child will not be attending a booked PUPS session. If we do not have 12 hours’ notice we will unfortunately have to charge you for the missed session.

Finally huge thanks to all those (now) Year 1 parents who helped to sew Superhero capes over the Summer. The teachers are delighted and we can't wait to see our mini Superhero's in action!


New procedures for sport letters and permission slips 
We have a new procedure for both children and parents to communicate with the school regarding Sports Fixtures. We will no longer be handing out letters to children with details of a fixture and a permission slip to hand back to school.

The new procedures are as follows:
Once a team has been selected an announcement will be made in Assembly that the team sheet has been posted on the SPORTS NOTICEBOARD which is located outside the year 4 classrooms for children to view.

An email will then be sent to the parents of the children selected. The email will include a letter which will be identical to previous letter templates, and will include the following:

  • Details of the fixture, including venue and timings
  • A permission slip for parents to fill out allowing children to participate
  • An agreement that kit will be returned to school washed and ready to wear
  • An agreement that it is parent's responsibility to collect their child from the fixture
  • If the fixture is away, offers of lifts to the venue.

Welcome back to everyone and a warm welcome to all new parents & children joining HT.

We have an exciting year planned and are looking forward to lots of fun events including Bingo, Bonfire night, Christmas & Summer Fairs and the new annual Fun Run, together with the famous Quiz night.

We are kicking off this year with the AGM on Tuesday 13th September, straight after the meet the teacher evening, where we will be electing the new committee members and approving last year’s accounts.

Gaby Close, Interim Head of SEND Operations and Autism Strategic Lead at Surrey County Council, will talk about her new role overseeing the Surrey SEND team (case officers), plus give an update on the Surrey Joint Autism Strategy and how you can contribute. Drawing, Painting, Composition with Elena Andreeva 
Our club runs on Mondays 3.30-5.00 pm at HT. The cost is £120 for 10 sessions . The children will learn drawing and watercolour painting. If your child loves drawing and wants to enrol, please contact Elena on 01483 560385. The start date will be confirmed.

RASASC Guildford is recruiting a Part Time Fund Raiser - 15 hours a week @ £16.50 per hour (equivalent to £12,870 per annum). RASASC is a registered charity established in 1992 and supports anyone who has been affected by Rape or Sexual Abuse. Closure date for applications is 30th September 2016.
