HTPD 16/9/16

16 September 2016

Dear Parents,

It was just great to see so many of you at one or both of our “Meet the Team” evenings earlier this week. I do hope you found it helpful to find out about the coming year, and inspiring too to hear what lies ahead for your children. Please do let us know if you need any further information or ideas about ways to support your child’s learning. I was also thrilled to hear about both HTSC’s and FOPS’ plans. Both school PTAs are a vibrant part of our school community and really do add an extra dimension to the school. Do consider getting involved and bringing even more enthusiasm and skills into the mix!

Last week’s day out at the Chantries for our Year 3 children, where they enjoyed meeting their Year 6 buddies and worked together to illustrate our school values using natural materials, was another example of our school community at work. Similarly seeing our new reception children being looked after by their Year 1 and Year 2 friends, I’ve been inspired to see community in action. I hope the change of weather doesn’t dampen the spirits of the Year 4 and Year 5 day-out today.

Our first HTPD hero, Florence Nightingale reminded us all of the power of kindness and caring. I also introduced the children to the kindness shown by a Bible hero, Elisha. He seemed to be always ready to meet the needs of the people he met, both healing their sickness and providing for their material needs. He even stopped them from getting food poisoning on one occasion! We were all inspired to try to follow in their footsteps by caring for one another.

With best wishes

After a week thinking of caring, Penelope in Year 4 wrote this thoughtful poem:

Traffic and parking:
A reminder to all parents to drive carefully around both sites, parking respectfully and considering the needs of pedestrians (please do not park on the pavement) as well as our neighbours.
A reminder as well that we operate an informal one-way system at both sites. At the infants please drive down Semaphore Road from Pewley Hill to Pewley Way. At the juniors please drive into Addison Road from Pewley Way. At the juniors please, if possible, park slightly further away from school avoiding the bottleneck that is Cline Road.

Phonics Evening, Wednesday 28 September, 7.00pm:
Parents in Year R are invited to the Phonics Evening next Wednesday. Although this is particularly intended for parents of Year R children, parents in other year groups are very welcome to attend if they would like to.

All our families should now be connected to the ParentMail PMX system. This is used regularly to pass on important information regarding school. If your child is a new starter at PD or HT (including those in Year 3 who were previously at PD), you should by now have received your registration email or text, and have registered your account. We will be sending out a message on Friday to advise that the Newsletter & JTLYKs are available on the website. If you have not received the email, please check your inbox and spam for a verification email. If you think you still have a problem, please contact Jane at PD or Sheryl at HT for help. Once you’ve registered, you can download the free parent App onto your Android (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.parentmail.parentmail&hl=en_GB) or iPhone (itunes.apple.com/gb/app/parentmail-pmx/id937274547). With the App, you can access ParentMail even when there’s no network connection, with no need to search through your busy personal inbox for school messages. You’ll also receive in-app notifications as soon as we send a message, which helps make sure things don’t get missed or forgotten.

Pupil Premium / Free School Meals – are you eligible?:
Government funding for schools includes factors such as free school meal eligibility – it is not just a matter of meal subsidy. Free school meal registration brings significant funding for the school to support your child’s education in many other ways, through the Pupil Premium scheme and other budget funding factors. In the budget year 2016/17, each pupil eligible for free meals attracts an extra £5,164 in funding to the school (the extra is not ring-fenced to individual pupils, but is a way of funding measures to increase attainment). Even though all children at the infants now receive a free lunch regardless of income, we still need this eligibility information in order to be able to receive the additional funding for this academic year. If you think you are eligible but have not yet registered, please contact either school office for more information on which benefits qualify. Registration is of course completely confidential.

Teacher-led clubs:
A reminder that teacher-led clubs will start next week, commencing 19 September.

Year R photo:
The Surrey Advertiser will be in school on Monday (19th) to take a group picture of our new Year R children. We will let you know when the picture is due to appear in the paper – usually not for a few weeks.

We have been providing paper copies of the newsletter for the first few weeks of term. Next Friday will be the last day for paper copies and the newsletter will then be available on the website. However, please let the office know if you do not have internet access and we will continue to provide a paper copy.

Isla Covington (Beech Class) has lost 2 cardigans, both named in at least two places. One is her Keller logo cardigan, the other is a Sainsbury’s navy blue one with little bows on the shoulders (a very popular choice at Pewley!). Both have been missing since last Wednesday & Friday.

New procedures for sport letters and permission slips: We have a new procedure for both children and parents to communicate with the school regarding Sports Fixtures.

We will no longer be handing out letters to children with details of a fixture and a permission slip to hand back to school.

The new procedures are as follows:
Once a team has been selected an announcement will be made in Assembly that the team sheet has been posted on the SPORTS NOTICEBOARD  which is located outside the year 4 classrooms for children to view.

An email will then be sent to the parents of the children selected. The email will include a letter which will be identical to previous letter templates, and will include the following:

  • Details of the fixture, including venue and timings

  • A permission slip for parents to fill out allowing children to participate

  • An agreement that kit will be returned to school washed and ready to wear

  • An agreement that it is parent's responsibility to collect their child from the fixture

  • If the fixture is away, offers of lifts to the venue.

Parents can either respond by filling out the permission slip and replying by email or print the email out, fill in the permission slip and send the slip in to school.
