Dear Parents,

On Monday this week, the teachers were lucky enough to take part in training lead by Geraldine Tame, our wonderful and inspiring librarian. She works with all the children across the school, guiding them into a lifetime love of reading; she is therefore extremely well equipped to pass on superb advice to us as we endeavour to teach those all-important reading skills. We considered how to help children master deep comprehension, rather than just decoding text. We thought about ways to inspire children's curiosity and how to ensure children are given enough support as they learn how to navigate our information-rich world.

One way you can join us in supporting your child's reading is to make sure you hear them read really regularly at home. Even once children are fluent readers, time spent with them talking about their books really does equip them with excellent comprehension skills. Do ask your child's teacher if you need some ideas for how to ask the right questions. "Tell me..." is always a good place to start.

With this week's assembly character being Little Miss Curious, and all of us thinking about how important it is to ask questions, I hope you aren't flummoxed by too many "why...?" questions at home! It is fascinating to see that children are innately curious - at HTPD we want to nurture that characteristic throughout the seven years of primary school and beyond.

Thank you for bearing with us whilst we change over to our new Parentmail PMX system. Everyone should have had a registration request by now, if not please let Jane at PD or Sheryl at HT know. The new site address is https://pmx.parentmail.co.uk/. There is a comprehensive help page that should answer most of your questions at http://parentmail.co.uk/help/parenthelp/ At the moment, Parentmail will email you with a notification that there is a message. It may ask you to then login to your account and you will see the message and any attachments. It is recommended that you download the Parentmail App as this will cut out the login stage and you will be taken directly to your message and any attachments. If you are still concerned about your account please do not hesitate to contact Parentmail directly.


Following a review of numbers attending PUPS in the holidays, its now been decided that this provision will no longer run as it's not financially viable for the school.

Is your child eligible for free school meals?

Please register before next Wednesday – Please contact the school office if there is any possibility that your child is eligible to receive free school meals or if you would like advice about this scheme and help in making an application. Free school meal registration brings significant funding for the school from the government to support your child’s education in many ways, through the Pupil Premium scheme and other budget funding factors. Registering for free school meals is of course entirely confidential. Speak to Lesley or email finance@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk Even if you do not wish to take up the free school dinner, or your child is receiving free infant meals, there are nevertheless educational benefits for your child if you are registered for free school meals. This needs to be registered immediately as we have to send returns on October 1st.


Year 1 trip to Wisley, Monday 28 September
Oak and Beech classes are looking forward to their trip to Wisley on Monday. Please remember to send your child to school with a packed lunch (containing no nuts). Keep an eye on the weather and, if it looks showery, please bring a raincoat as well. We will be leaving school at 9.15 am and returning by about 2.45pm.

For the first few weeks of term we have been sending home paper copies of the newsletter. The newsletter is also available on the school website on Friday afternoons and we will be sending out a ParentMail reminder as well. If you do not have access to the internet please let the school office know and we will continue to provide a paper copy.

Running Club, Tuesdays
We would welcome any parents who would like to join us for Running Club as this would enable us to go out for a run rather than just on the field. Please contact Frances if you are able to help: francesc@pewleydown.surrey.sch.uk. Please ensure that your child has a waterproof jacket (as we will go out in the rain), a snack (no nuts), water bottle and trainers. Children should be collected from the Rainbow Room.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the first FOPS meeting of the year and also those that could not make it, but passed on ideas to their class reps. We had many great new ideas for fund raising events for both the children and parents, so please get in contact with your class reps and get involved !

Christmas Fair Raffle Prizes
Ati Dalgaard and Debbie Parker are making great progressing acquiring prizes for the Christmas raffle. If you are able to donate a prize or know of someone they can contact for a donation please let them know (a.dalgaard@yahoo.com and wawadeb@hotmail.com)

IQ Christmas Cards
Our first fundraiser of the year started this week. Your child will have brought home an amazing Christmas card design they have created. On the reverse of this design is the order form showing the different very high quality Christmas cards, thank you postcards, gift wrap, labels and value packs you can buy.

Please can you complete the order form and check the child’s name (which will be printed on the back of the card) is correctly spelt. Cheques (payable to FOPS with your child’s name and ‘IQ cards’ written on the back) /cash must be handed into the school office with the order form as per the details on the sheet.

All order forms and payments must be returned to the school office by Friday 2nd October 2015. All ordered products will be handed out by the first week of December.

Get practicing your dance moves! Ticket order forms for the school disco were sent out last Friday in book bags. If a form did not make its way home, they are available from the school office.

May we remind you that the deadline for secondary applications is the 31st October. Parents need to complete and submit the application online or on paper by 31st October 2015. We had our first girls cross country fixture at St Catherine's recently. There were lots of successes, well done to all involved, especially those new to cross county. Full report and photos to follow.

We could not run sports fixtures without the help of parents and we are very grateful for the support we are given. We are aware that many parents are unable to help out or attend sports fixtures and for those of you new to the school or new to sports fixtures, we want to clarify a few procedures which will hopefully enable the fixtures to run smoothly.

If your child has been chosen to represent the school in a sports team, we nearly always meet after school at the bottom of the Atrium.

If the fixture is off site, we ask parents who are helping with lifts to meet there too. We take a register and hand out competition kit. We then ensure everyone knows where they are going, allocate children to lifts and set off to the event. Whilst at the event, the teacher present will do their best to look after the children but they may also be umpiring, coaching and supporting from the side lines or helping with time keeping etc... It is important that we have as many parents around, to both support their children and the rest of the team, and also to help us ensure that all the children are happy and feel looked after.

After the event it is vital that each child along with their parent finds either Laura or the teacher in charge, so we know every child has left with a responsible adult. In every case it is the parent's responsibility to pick up their child after the event. Unless agreed beforehand, we will not be returning to school and so cannot provide lifts back.

It is also the parent's responsibility to return all kit back to school washed and ready to wear. We need as many offers of lifts to external events as possible. At times if may be frustrating that there are more lifts than needed and so if you have offered but would rather not help with lift shares then please add this to an email to Laura or to the permission slip and we can let you know nearer the time whether you will be needed or not. We do not decline offers of lifts in case on the day, parents / children drop out and we are left with a shortage.

If the fixture is at Holy Trinity, then we ask the parents of children in the team to help with light refreshments at the end of the game. This will be no more than making up some squash, getting the cups ready, perhaps making tea and coffee and putting out some biscuits or cakes and clearing up afterwards.

We would also be very grateful if you can take as many photos as possible and send them in to Laura so we can display them in school and also put them on the website.

Lunch discounts
Deadline for this term is Monday 28th – The basic lunch price at Holy Trinity is £2.40 each, but there are discounts available for bulk credit purchases. If you buy a whole year by 28 September, the meal price is £2.30 or if you buy a full term in advance the meal price is £2.35. Please see the lunch price table on the school website ‘Payments’ page for the amounts you need to pay for each year group (days out are taken into account). After the deadline, your discounted payments will be uprated on ParentPay to the full meal price. For those not taking advantage of the discounts, please buy credit in multiples of £2.40 and keep your child’s lunch account in credit.


  • Black bag belonging to Mabel Boissiere in 3A. The bag is a rucksack with different coloured lips all over it. Inside is a raincoat (labelled), pencil case and diary.
  • Amira Schell (5G) has lost her raincoat. It is a red colour with a hood and a zip closure. It is also labelled with her name. If you know of its whereabouts, please let the office know.
  • Joseph Williams (6T) has mislaid his named PE kit in a blue ‘Team GB’ drawstring bag. Has anyone taken it home by mistake? Please contact the school office if you know where it might be! Thank you.

Please join us for a rip-roaring family BINGO night on Saturday 10 October from 6-8pm. SEAFARE of Burpham will provide a fish and chip supper and a fully stocked bar will be available on the night. Back by popular demand, Jes Moon will be our caller and host for the evening.

HTSC Meeting - Tuesday 13 October
This will take place at 8pm at Rogues. All welcome, please come along and find out more about what we do. We will be discussing our plans for this year and would really welcome new ideas.

Bonfire Night - Friday 6 November
Save the date for what promises to be another fantastic firework extravaganza.

Phil the Bag – week commencing 9 November
Please keep all your old clothes and shoes as we will be collecting them during the week beginning 9 November (final collection day Thursday 12 November). Bags will be sent home with your children beforehand however normal bin bags can also be used.
