Infant Newsletter 14/9/12

14 September 2012

We have had a really good start to term at both sites – all the children seem happy and have settled quickly into their new classes. This week we had the second part of the Ofsted at Pewley Down. We were inspected on RE, assemblies, ethos and leadership. Again the result is embargoed for about 2 weeks, but I am able to say that we got exactly the result we had most hoped for! The report will be published on the website as soon as we receive it and then I will write to you about it in more detail.
Our two main focus areas for the curriculum this term are maths and writing. We have set targets in these areas and these are included in our School Development Plan; it is my intention to publish this on the website soon. At Holy Trinity the new ways of organising the teaching of maths will be discussed at the Meet the Team meeting that takes place on September 20th.  This will give you an opportunity to listen to and question me about this new initiative.

Following this meeting the HTSC (the HT PTA) AGM will take place at 8pm. We still need people to volunteer for the position of Chair (or 2 x Co-chairs) and also some class reps. Please consider if you could help in this way.
At Pewley Down the inspectors highlighted the gap between girls’ and boys’ writing at the end of last year.  This is a national picture and something that we are very mindful of in the way we teach the children.  At our residential In Service Training writing, and especially writing which encourages boys to make progress, will be the main theme.
We continue to strive for excellence in all that we do and really hope that this will make a difference to the challenge and enjoyment of our teaching for all children.

With Best Wishes, Richard

School Council
The new Year 2 school council have now been elected (Heather Learoyd, Lucy Harrison, Johanan McNair Scott and Milo Derham) so watch this space for our next project. The Year 1 reps stay the same ( Ella Randall, Ruben Parnell, Annie Brook, Freddie Kay) as they were only elected in the Summer Term.

Wild Place
Our flower beds at the Wild Place have taken on a life of their own and really need some adult attention before the children can get involved. If anybody is able to spare some time to don some gardening gloves please let Nicola know (nicolab@pewleydown.surrey.sch.uk).

Star Awards
Thank you to Caracoli for sponsoring our weekly Star Awards and we know lots of you have enjoyed sharing a coffee/cake with your children to celebrate. Sadly they do not feel able to continue to sponsor the whole school and will now only be providing vouchers for our Reception Year Star Award winners. Caracoli is the upstairs cafĂ© at Steamer Trading at the top of the High Street.

FOPS Meeting - Monday 24 September at 8pm - The first FOPS meeting of the school year will be on Monday 24 September from 8pm in the staff room. At this meeting we will be planning the events for the forthcoming year. All are welcome. Come along to find out what FOPS does, how you can get involved or let us know your ideas for fantastic fundraising events.

Second Hand Uniform - Many thanks to Claire Stone (mum of Zoe) who has very kindly taken on this task!

Christmas Cards - Many thanks to Natalie Savage (mum of Elias) who has kindly agreed to
co-ordinate this. You will hear more about this in the coming weeks.

Christmas Raffle - We would like to make an early start finding raffle prizes for the Christmas Fair and are looking for a volunteer to take this on. There is no need to come to any meetings and this job is usually done and dusted by mid-November. If you could help with this, please speak to Jane Bell or Emily Bourke.

Chestnut Class - We still only have one class rep for Chestnut class. Poor Ros! Could anyone with a child in Chestnut class help her?!

• We are a nut-free school. Please ensure that packed lunches don’t include items containing nuts.
• Water bottles should only contain water.
• Please name all school uniform.
• Please let the office know if any of your contact details, especially phone numbers, change.
• Also let the office know if there is any change to your child’s medical or dietary needs.
• Earrings – if children have pierced ears school policy is that they must only wear studs at school. Studs need to be covered with plasters for PE or games lessons. Please could you either send your child in with some tape or without earrings on their PE days.

PUPS vacancies
We are looking for play-workers to work at PUPs, the after-school club. If you are interested, please e-mail Bev Reed for more information (bevr@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk).

Piano Lessons - a few slots available for the autumn term. Music reading and basic theory taught. A fun introduction to playing the piano. Beginners very welcome. Contact David Hyde on 01483 237141 or via e-mail on waggydee@btinternet.com.

Lost: Baby Gluyas has lost his hat - white with a blue rim. If anyone finds it, could you please let Cherrie Gluyas (James, Oak Class) or the office know.

Fundraising for Shooting Star Chase
I’m doing the Virgin London triathlon on 22nd September with my brother and his wife. We are doing the sprint triathlon which is 750 metre swim (in the thames!), 20K bike ride and 5K run. We are raising money for Shooting Star Chase who are a local Children’s hospice, based in Artington Guildford. They currently support my daughter Evie (& have done for 6 years) and us as a family. The support we get from them as a family and Evie individually is vital. Therefore my reason to raise funds for Chase. Any contribution to help me/us get to our target would be most gratefully received. Thanks v much. Carrie Witts (Maddie, Beech & Olly, 5A).
