Infant 19/10/12

19 October 2012

Dear Parents,

Well it’s been a great week, everyone seems to have enjoyed the 200th birthday celebrations. We have enjoyed our open afternoon and tea party, our thanksgiving service and our bicentenary concert. It has been great meeting many former pupils and staff. Two ladies who were 92 and started at the school in 1925 were among our visitors. We were pleased to find out that we had two MPs; a shadow Minister and a Minister of State, who were former pupils. They both sent us messages of support.

The concert last night was excellent with two operatic sopranos as our leading performers: both pupils in the nineties. We have had great visitors from the past in our morning assemblies, this morning was Alison’s son, Josh, who is now an Army Captain.

One thing we try to do at Holy Trinity is to open children up to all the possibilities that life could hold for them and certainly not to close any possibilities down. So I hope that seeing what former pupils have done will further expand their horizons.

For me the 200th anniversary marks the great progress we have made in so many ways. No longer do we have ill-fed, dirty and ragged children in schools. Teachers are more professional and children much better behaved. Staying the same is the unrelenting pressure of external forces on the school. In the past this led to a system of payment by results, today a system where the schools considered less than good, in a snapshot inspection, are pressurised still further and headteachers often dismissed!

I feel very privileged to be following after a group of school leaders who gave their very best to make the school a place where children could thrive and develop in a caring environment. The Victorian Motto was the single word ‘duty’ , the early twentieth century was ‘Fear God, Serve the King’ and now of course we have the all-encompassing ‘Learn to Live’. All three pointing the children to see beyond themselves and the mundane to higher and greater horizons – I hope that we will continue to do this in the future.

With best wishes, Richard

Great Fire of Pewley: The annual great fire of Pewley will be taking place in the car park at 2.00pm on Tuesday 6 November. Year 2 parents are very welcome to come and join us.

Rosemary Colyer
Some of you will remember Rosemary Colyer who was a teacher at Pewley Down for very many years until her early retirement to become her mother’s carer five years ago. Sadly, Rosemary died peacefully last Friday having battled cancer with cheerful fortitude for the last year. There will be a Service of Thanksgiving at St Saviour’s Church in Guildford on Wednesday 31 October at 2pm to which all are welcome.

Poppy Appeal:
Poppies will be on sale from the school office again this year: next Wednesday morning (24th) and then again after half term.

Northbrook Wrap Orders - Final Reminder!
Just to remind you all orders for Northbrook need to be handed in before Half Term so the last day is next Wednesday. Don't forget all of those who place an order will be entered for the prize draw worth £500 at PC World (see details on order forms). Contact Becca Clegg if you have any queries or need further order forms - 07796 780042.

School Disco - Last year's family disco proved so popular we're excited to announce we're holding another one in the school hall on Saturday 17 November. Doors open at 5.30pm. We'll be turning the lights back up at 8.30pm. Tickets will go on sale shortly on a first come, first served basis. Look out for the application form coming home in book bags.

School Calendar Competition - As part of the school's 200th birthday celebrations, we will be putting together a 2013 "Birthday" calendar which will go on sale in the run up to Christmas. We are now holding a competition to find a fabulous birthday themed picture for our front cover. All entries should be on landscape, A4 sized white paper and handed in to the school office with your child's name and class on the back by Friday 9 November. As the picture will need to be reproduced, please use felt pens or paints and avoid using pencils, glitter and metallic inks as these don't show up well when reproduced.

FOPS Meeting - The next FOPS meeting will be held at 8pm on Monday 22 October in the staff room. Everyone welcome.

Micro Scooters - We are participating in an initiative offered by Micro Scooter. FOPs will receive 10% commission on all Micro Scooter products sold in the run up to the School Christmas Fair on 2nd December. Brochures and order forms will be available after half term. All purchases are guaranteed to be delivered before Christmas.

Phoenix Christmas Cards - A little reminder that any orders for Phoenix Christmas Cards need to be handed in to the School Office by 23 October. FOPS receive 30% commission on all orders.

Phil the Bag - Having a half term wardrobe clear out? Phil the Bag is a scheme which recycles unwanted textiles and raises funds for the school at the same time. Unwanted textiles brought into school are then sold on and distributed to people who can use them in developing countries, which saves them from going to landfill. We are having a Phil the bag collection on Friday 16 November. Please bring any unwanted textiles (including all kinds of clothing, shoes, bags, belts, hats, curtains, towels, bedding) in the bags coming home next week (or a bin bag) to school on the morning of 16 November. More information about the scheme can be found at www.philthebag.co.uk.

Operation Christmas Child: Leaflets will be coming home next week about the Samaritan’s Purse appeal where shoeboxes filled with small gifts are sent to children in need across Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It’s a good way of getting children to think about giving as well as receiving and possibly an activity for half term if you have some spare time. Boxes will be collected in mid-November and we will let you know the exact date.

Head Lice: We have had a case of head lice in Year 1 so please check your child’s hair carefully and treat if necessary. It is worth checking hair regularly (once a week) for eggs or lice. If you do find nits give the hair a thorough comb through with a nit comb (eg Nitty Gritty Nit free Comb). A generous application of conditioner also makes the combing easier. Continue to comb through the hair at least every 3 days for 2 weeks to ensure that all eggs and lice are eradicated otherwise the whole cycle will start again. Nits are a very common problem among primary age children who usually catch them due to close contact with their classmates.

Kitchen Vacancy: We are looking for a kitchen assistant to work 3 hours over the lunchtime period. For more information please contact the kitchen or school office.

Found: Epi-pen found on the floor in the downstairs corridor on Thursday afternoon. All the children’s
epi-pens are accounted for, so it could possibly belong to a parent.
Lost: Sam Hill-Price, Hazel, has lost his complete (named) PE kit and bag

Josh (Romero, Chestnut Class) ran the 5km Riverside Run on Sunday in 37 minutes, beating 22 adults to the finish line! He was the youngest runner by a long way, and so far has raised over £300 for Disability Challengers. There's still time to sponsor him, all the money goes direct to the charity and benefits disabled children in Guildford.
