 Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been really interesting this week to have hosted two visitors from Goldsmiths and Southbank Universities in London. They’ve been in school compiling a case-study around the impact of our ethos and values on children’s educational outcomes. It’s been great to see confident, happy children discussing really challenging issues in class with respect and empathy, kindness and tolerance. This has also been really evident when I’ve recently taken groups of prospective parents around both sites – and in fact, it’s the thing many parents have spoken about at our recent parent consultation evenings. How lovely to see that our “Learn to Live” vision is being lived out across the school!

One area of school life that I’ve been concerned doesn’t always reflect our ethos is the WhatsApp communities that I believe have been set up by the different year groups and classes. I can see that these groups are a useful forum for checking out details that might not have made it home, but I worry when I hear about criticisms and concerns being made so publicly, especially when individual children, staff or families are identifiable. Please do make sure that everything that is said is kind, respectful and compassionate; often rumours and hearsay aren’t helpful. These groups aren’t run by the school, but I do hope that they live up to the respectful approach that we are so keen to live by. Remember not to post photos other than those of your child – other people’s children may not have consented to their image being shared. Please do feel able to email me if you have any concerns about any area of school life and let’s set a really positive example to the children in the way that we all communicate, both face to face and online.

There’s been a lot going on in school this week – with the end of Road Safety Week at the infants being marked by superbly bright colours and hi-vis! Then Year 5 have had a wonderful Tudor Day with a visit from Queen Elizabeth herself; I’m glad to report that she seemed very pleased with the entertainments this year and didn’t threaten too many court jesters, musicians or cooks! Earlier in the week, the infants had their first house assemblies, finding out about their house heroes and at the juniors, the annual music medley gave many of our expert musicians chance to perform. Finally, I really enjoyed the Year 3 production of “Splash” this afternoon. It was a marvellous show and really highlighted how well our Year 3 children have settled in and are confidently taking part in the life of the school.

Have a lovely weekend everybody.

With best wishes, Clare

For those not yet settled, we look forward to your child’s account being settled. Thank you, finance@htpd.surrey.sch.uk.

HT Sport this week from Laura S

On Thursday Year 5 had their House netball competition showcasing everything they have learnt this term. The games were umpired by our Year 6 House Captains and with 16 teams playing and every team playing 6 games of 10 minutes a lot of netball was played! Well done to Keller who were crowned Year 5 netball champions.

We are so pleased that we are seeing fewer watches, Fitbits and and jewellery in school and that hair is being tied back for PE. Now we are in the winter months please make sure your child has appropriate winter PE clothes to wear. Leggings or tracksuit bottoms are a good investment and a long sleeved top to go underneath house PE t-shirts, or a house fleece are very useful to have in school at all times.

Menu - Week 1

Happy Friday (again). It feels like these come round a bit too quickly when writing the newsletter but not quickly enough when dealing with tired children and having to get up for work! Please brace yourselves, this is a long one. We have dates for the diary, some information about easy ways to support the school just by doing your usual shopping, and a start to the serious begging for Christmas volunteers and support with donations etc this week so here goes…...

Elf and pizza, 1st December 3-5pm. There are still a few days to get your pre-order hot food orders (here) in ready for our Christmas film afternoon a week on Sunday. Please do bring friends, families, prospective parents, HT parents - the more the merrier. We do also need some help on the day - and it’s genuinely not too strenuous. The sign-up sheet to offer some of your time for a great cause is here.

Christmas Wreath Making, 5th December 7-10pm. We have extended the booking for this until Tuesday of next week to give people a bit more time to get their forms in, but if you would like to attend and aren’t at the school to hand over paper, please do email Kayleigh.ashraf@gmail.com and she will save you a place!

Christmas Fair

Wanted - Person with artistic flair…......If you or someone you know who is artistic and wants to lead the Santa's Grotto please contact Jo: joannamarkwell@yahoo.co.uk

Donations Days - Wednesday 4th to Friday 6th December

Most of our stalls depend on your generosity. Wednesday 4th to Friday 6th there will be boxes outside the school entrance for ‘stuff for stalls’ and we’d love you to bring in the following:

Bags or boxes of sweets - We are going to be bagging the booty bags this year to make things easier for parents, so please bring in bags of unopened sweets for us to bag.

Bottles for the Bottle Tombola – Any unopened bottle from ketchup to bubble bath, shampoo to champagne. The more the merrier!

Chocolate Tombola - Absolutely anything chocolatey BUT NUT FREE PLEASE.

Soft Toy Tombola - Good quality, clean, second hand soft toys.

Christmas jumpers – any size in good condition.

Toys - this is a great excuse for a clear-out! Please make sure toys are complete and don’t have pieces missing!

Bits and pieces for crafts - odd (clean) socks (ideally children’s), toilet roll holders, felt.

Please bring your stuff on Wednesday 4th, Thursday 5th or Friday 7th December and leave it in the appropriately labelled box near the front door of the playground.

Shopping online this Christmas? Did you know that when you shop with big online companies including Waitrose & Partners, Sainsbury's, Ebay a percentage of the money you spend can come to the school at no extra cost to you!! Just sign up to Easy Fundraising (it’s free) and choose Friends of Pewley Down Infant School as your chosen cause. It’s one of the quickest and easiest ways of raising funds for the school and costs us nothing! http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk

Last cake sales for this term:
29th November – Beech; 6th December – Willow; 13th December - Hazel

This year’s cakes sales have been a phenomenal success so far (we have raised approx £175 in two sales!). We think this may be in part to the addition of fruit and popcorn options. Please do remember small change on a Friday to make purchases, and when it is your class’s week to provide the cakes please also think about fruit and popcorn options.

HT Christmas Fair 29th Nov 6-8pm - HTSC would like to invite all Pewley Down families to this year’s Christmas Fair. There will be a raffle, mulled wine, hot food, Santa’s Grotto and games, as well as a variety of external stalls to get some Xmas shopping.

Pewley Christmas Fair - 14th December, 3-5.30pm - The sign-up sheet for volunteers is here, and raffle tickets will be in the book bags soon. If you haven't already then please do get this date in the diary - if you hadn't noticed we are very keen that people come.

Hi Everyone,

Here’s our update for this week for you – “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!”

Christmas Fair
Thank you for all the donations you’ve sent it so far! Amazing collection of goodies this morning at school. Don’t worry if you have forgotten today, you can keep donating to the bottles, chocolate, Christmas jumpers and Jolly Jars etc. until Thursday 28th November.

There will be a whole school sign up sent out via ParentMail this weekend for volunteers for the stalls. We will need help all day on the Friday to label up the tombola prizes and set up of the fair is from 3.30pm. If you can drop in for 10 minutes or an hour, any length of time you can give makes such a difference and there is always something to do!

Santa – anyone willing to take on the role of a lifetime? We need 2 Santas for our Recycling themed Grotto. Please contact helen@thomasday.co.uk if you can help.
