HTPD 26/5/17

26 May 2017

Dear Parents,

Everywhere around school this week, I’ve been reminded by the children about all that is beautiful and good in the world. Sometimes in very sharp contrast to the sadness and suffering, especially in the light of the tragic news from Manchester, the children have brought smiles and laughter – “seeing heaven in the moment”. As our assembly series has reminded us, God provides green pastures and still water for us to lie down and rest, even if we walk through the dark valleys. Take a read of Psalm 23 if you’re in need of encouragement and hope. This week’s chapter of Pilgrim’s Progress told the story of Christian climbing a difficult, narrow path up a mountain. In the story, the Lord of the hill provides a beautiful green arbour for him to rest – and despite the challenge ahead, he has a restful, deep sleep.

I really enjoyed the Year 1 garden party as they proudly told me and their many visitors about all their hard work this term. So much progress and eager enthusiastic learners! Fluffy Friday too always brings plenty of joy to the school community. Thank you again for your support in holding these special days – the £1 donation ensures the children can choose from so many excellent activities.

We are very proud of our girls’ junior athletics team this week – they took part in a competitive event against some of the best teams in the district and came 4th overall. We congratulate all the athletes, but special mention goes to Tobi (Y6), Poppy (Y4) and Emily (Y3) for their record breaking wins! We are keen to make sure of our future success in sport by planning for the renovation of our all-weather pitch. If anyone has expertise in this sort of project management, or has suggestions for fundraising on a large scale, please do get in touch with me.

We’re looking forward to our Y6 Spanish travellers returning late this evening. They’ve had a really successful visit to our partner school in Aguilar. Take a look at the Twitter photos for a glimpse into their time away.

Thank you for your partnership in the school community – I’m encouraged by the feedback from the parent survey and will publish a summary of the results after half term, as well as telling you about some of the ways we’ll be acting on your ideas for what’s next! I hope you all have a lovely bank holiday weekend and restful half term break!

With best wishes

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers
Collecting has now ceased and we are busy preparing an order. Thank you all for your support.

Healthy Week, Monday 5 - Friday 9 June
The first week after half term will be our Healthy Week when we have sporty experts coming in to run exciting workshops with the children, and they will be learning about every aspect of keeping healthy – from learning to relax and sleep well to eating well and exercising enough too.

Please can your child wear their school PE kit (trainers, house t-shirt, shorts or joggers, jumper) every day. Many activities will take place outside even in light rain, so they also need to have a light raincoat in school. Please can they also bring in an empty food packet, with a barcode, of something they like to eat (nothing containing nuts) on the Monday as we will be looking at what is in the food we eat. On Friday, children may bring in a named bike (with helmet) or scooter as they will have a chance to ride it in the playground. We do have a few in school to share if your child does not have one. If they can come to school on their bike or scooter that day – even better!

Breakfast Club
A reminder to stay with your child until Breakfast Club opens at 8.00am and you can hand them over to staff in the hall. Please don’t leave them in the library before this as there is no supervision in this area.

Run to Sochi update:
This week we have run 236 miles.

Amber Grundy, Chestnut Class, has lost her Minnie Mouse white baseball hat at school.
Max Tate, Chestnut Class, has lost one trainer (red, black and white, size 13) possibly taken home in error.

PEWLEY SUMMER FAIR – Sunday 11th June 1-3pm:
Our Summer Fair is fast approaching and is one of the school’s major fundraising events. It raises significant and invaluable funds to help pay for teaching equipment and resources. We really hope you will join us for this fun filled, family afternoon with games, stalls, ice cream, food and lots more.

To make this a success we do need YOUR help with the following please:

Sign up to help – Your class reps are busy organising rotas to run the various stalls that make up the fair. Please support them and assign your name to a timeslot. We simply can’t run the fair without volunteers!
Raffle tickets – The Raffle tickets for the Summer Fair came home in book bags this week and there are some fantastic prizes on offer. Please look out for them, sell as many as you can and return them to school with monies prior to the fair. Extra books are available from the school office and will be on sale at the Fair!

Monday 5th June - Donations Day - This is NOT a MUFTI day, children to wear uniform:
Please bring in donations, as listed below, and leave them in the labelled boxes in the playground.  We are collecting the following:

  • Donations for the Luxury Hampers – Please see the lists provided by your class reps.
  • Booty Bags – Please fill a small size sandwich bag with sweets and small toys (left-overs from party bags are great) and tie it with a ribbon.  Please make sure that the Booty Bags are unisex and do not contain nuts or anything which could be dangerous for small children such as boiled sweets or marbles. These are very popular, so please make as many as possible.  For more details check out “Help! What’s A Booty Bag?” on the FOPS/PTA page of the school website.

HTSC News (Junior PTA)

Many thanks to all of you who ran and supported the HTPD fun runners on Sunday. It was a fantastic event and a HUGE thanks must go to Duncan Rosie and the other members of the Fun Run team for organising everything so brilliantly.

Please keep your sponsorship money coming in. This year we have set up a BT MyDonate page to help collect participants' well-earned sponsorship money. Please ask family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to go to https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/htsc and click on the 'Donate Now' button to make a donation.

Alternatively it is also possible to use the paper sponsor form to collect sponsorship money the more traditional way. Additional copies are available at both Pewley and HT receptions.

We kicked off the planning of the annual HT Summer Fair on Wednesday. This year the Fair will be a beach party with all the usual fun summer stalls plus a few new ones – watch this space! Please support this event if you can. Your class reps will be in touch after half-term with details of how to sign up to volunteer to help on the night and also with details of all the different donations needed for the Fair.
We will be running the poster design competition again this year. Details to follow after half term.
There are still several slots free for the external stalls at the Summer Fair. If you would like a stall at the Fair or know of anyone who would like to have a stall, please email Bronwyn Clifford (bronwynclifford@gmail.com).

Tickets are now on sale for the Havana style HTPD summer party. It will be a relaxed, fun filled evening with a Hog Roast, dancing and a well-stocked bar at this local riverside location. We are looking for two volunteers to take over the running of the school uniform shop. This is a role which will take a few hours a week. If you are interested in taking this on, please contact the HT office.

Are you a parent who works for a company? We are looking for parents who are willing to ask their employers about Match Funding schemes to help boost our fundraising at our summer events. If you can help, or require more information please contact Helen Day (helen@thomasday.co.uk).

A huge thanks to Cavender Sales & Lettings in Guildford, our major sponsor now for the third year running.
