HTPD 27/5/16

27 May 2016

Dear Parents,

Ginnie and I spoke to the children today in assembly at the juniors about the exciting news that she has been appointed as headteacher at a delightful infant school in Churt. It’s no surprise that the governors at St. John’s were keen to recruit her – she has so many talents and gifts that ideally suit her for this new role, but we will miss her! We will of course want to celebrate with her at the end of term as she says her farewells to HTPD. I also wanted to let you know that Julia’s baby was born last week – welcome to George and congratulations to Mum and Dad!

Today is Fluffy Friday and the whole school is alive with the buzz of learning. The children are taking part in a wonderful range of diverse activities, from building an eco-habitat, learning a new sport, tracking aeroplane flights, or swimming in the summer sunshine at the Lido. Some children at the infants are exploring the junior school and of course our Year 6 Pewley Playmates are hard at work! It’s great to see the staff creatively planning to allow the children new opportunities and challenge. We’re also looking forward to welcoming back our Year 6 Spanish travellers who’ve been having a super week with our partner school. They’ve been excellent ambassadors – take a look at the photos on Twitter!

Last night the governors took part in some excellent training at the school that reminded them of their responsibilities to ensure safeguarding is held as a high priority in all aspects of school life. It enabled me to reflect again on why Fluffy Friday and residential visits are such valuable “whole child” learning experiences!

Finally, can I say a huge thank you to FOPS who have raised funds to allow us to build a “music garden” at the infants. It’s a fabulous new resource and we’re excited to show it off to you all at the Pewley Summer Fair on Sunday June 12th.

It’s great to be able to wish you all a very happy half term break after such a wonderful start to the summer term. I know that all the children and staff will enjoy a few days of sunshine and relaxation!

With best wishes, Clare

Healthy Week, Monday 6 – Friday 10 June: The week after half term is our Healthy Week, funded through the Sports Premium. Children will be taking part in different activities every day including Surrey Scorchers Basketball, Kickstart Fencing and Premier Tennis. Children should come to school in their PE kits and trainers every day that week.

Golden Boot Challenge:
A reminder that we will be asking the children how they come to school on Friday 10, 17, 24 June and 1 July. If you do drive to school, please try and park a bit further away and then walk the rest of the way. This will still count as a greener way of coming to school.

Run to Rio update
: The updated total for week 6 is: 2270

Sainsbury’s vouchers:
Please have a look round at home and bring in any remaining Active Kids vouchers.

Lost Property: We have collected together a fair amount of un-named uniform from around the school. This is now in the lost property box outside the lower entrance. Please have a look if you have items missing. Please also remember to name all children’s uniform to make it easier to reuite with its owner.

Lost: Manuel (Oak Class) has lost his plain blue, un-named school jumper (not a house sweatshirt).
Cora Byrne (Willow Class) has lost her navy Mandela cardigan, age 3-4 years, named Byrne.

SUMMER FAIR Sunday 12th June
Our Summer Fair will be on the 12th June from 1pm until 3pm. It is always a fun, family afternoon with traditional games, bouncy castle, ice cream, food and lots more.  This is one of the school major fund raising events, which has previously generated a significant amount of money for the school. We hope you will join us to make it a success, we need your help please and we are asking you to donate items for the stalls:

Donations for the Luxury Hampers - Please see the list of donations ideas circulated by your class reps.
Booty Bags– Please fill a small size sandwich bag with sweets, chocolates and small toys (left-overs from party bags are great) and tie it with a ribbon. Please make sure that the Booty Bags are unisex and do not contain nuts or anything which could be dangerous for small children such as boiled sweets or marbles. These are very popular, so please make as many as possible. For more details check out “Help! What’s A Booty Bag?” on the PTA page of the school website.

Bottles for the Bottle Tombola – Any bottle from olive oil to bubble bath, from squash to champagne. The more the merrier!

Good quality second hand books, toys and DVDs.

Please bring all donations and leave them in the boxes in the playground on Monday 6th June, which will NOT be a Mufti Day for the children. You should have received raffle tickets in book bags this week. More tickets are available from the school office should you need them.

If any parents or local businesses would like a stall at the fair, or donate a prize to the raffle please contact Susanne smw555@hotmail.com.

Book Swap
Geraldine Tame, our Librarian, will be running a Book Swap during the lunch break on Tuesday, 7th June. Children should bring in an old book and swap it for a different one. There will be a prize draw for everyone who takes part.

There are no sports fixtures for the week beginning 6th June.

Junior Menu - Week 2

Many thanks to all of you who came to the Maytime Party. It was a great night and initial figures suggest we raised around £3,500 which is a fantastic result.

A HUGE thanks must go to the parents who kindly donated prizes for the auction - it formed the major part of the funds raised and we couldn't have done it without your generous support.

The Summer Fair Planning is now underway and we have launched a Summer Fair poster competition for the children for over half term - entries to be in by Tuesday 7 June. Please look out for the Parentmail with further details on how to enter.

We will also be asking for soft toys for the hook-a-bear stall. We can never have enough of these, so if you are having a clear out over half term, please put them aside for the fair!

There are still several slots free for the external stalls. If you would like a stall at the fair or know of anyone who would like to have a stall, please email Jo Burne (joburne@yahoo.co.uk).

We have had a great response to the HTPD Fun Run. Thank you everyone.
By way of reminder:
Two races are being held at Sutherland Park - Reception to Year 2 (2.00pm start) and Years 3 to 6 (2.30pm start).

Thirsty Thursday – There will be no Thirsty Thursday in June (due to the half term holiday).
