Junior 1/5/15

01 May 2015

Dear Parents,

Being in my last term is, in some ways, a tricky situation. Everything becomes tightly focused and my personal targets need to be achievable and short term. I am working really hard to continue to make a difference to the children and whole school community. Here are some of the issues which I am addressing:

• Children’s handwriting - I believe that this could be better throughout the school and so we have started a handwriting revolution. This includes everyone being well aware of our handwriting style: cursive, all letters join except capitals and a particular form for f, x, z and s. Letters formed carefully always starting with lead-in strokes from the bottom of the line, numbers starting from the top. We will encourage some children in Year 2 to use a pen and more in Years 3 and 4. By Year 5 all children will be using handwriting pens and we will introduce fountain pens to Year 6.

• Introducing laptops for some children with particular needs.

• Working on stress reduction throughout the school community. Nationally, 64% of teachers have visited their GPs with stress or stress-related illnesses. I am passionate as head about making teaching an enjoyable and fulfilling job at HTPD. I am therefore, pleased that the stress levels are much lower than in most schools. This leads to happy teachers and in turn to children with an enjoyment of school and learning. I will be doing more work with staff on this area and attempt to enable them to achieve a good work/life balance.

Another of my targets this term is to help Clare put in place more elements of our Christian distinctiveness. For the rest of this term, please come to see me if you want to discuss any current issues, secondary schools or your child’s learning ,health and welfare. Please see Clare if you want to talk about any matters pertaining to your child’s future from next term onwards.

Have a great long weekend! I am going on a pilgrimage along the St. Swithuns Way - Winchester to Farnham.

With best wishes, Richard

May we remind parents that when we return on Tuesday 5 May, Tempest Photographers will be in school to take class photos. Please send your child into school in full winter school uniform - they should wear their white polo shirts but no summer dresses. Thank you.

We have been notified by Thames Water that they will be working in Pewley Way for approximately two weeks commencing on Tuesday 5 May 2015. Thames Water will be working from Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 6:00pm and on Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00pm. During this time temporary traffic lights will be in place and the bus stop at the junction of Pewley Way and Semaphore Road will be suspended during the duration of the work. Thames Water send their apologies for any inconvenience caused by this work.

Following last Friday's assembly, it has been great fun to hear what you and your children are planning to do in order to help fundraise for our new school computers. Thank you parents and carers for your support in helping to turn our children's fundraising ideas (from toy sale, garage sale, car wash and pizza night) into reality. We will keep this fundraising venture 'bubbling away' all Summer term. Any questions, please contact nataliesavage@me.com

It is Thirsty Thursday time again! Please come along and bring your friends to a special thirsty Thursday election night drinks at Rogues on Thursday May 7th from 8pm.

HT @ Home - extended

Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm for HT @ Home already! Many of us socialise with people we've met via this school, with the friends we make in the class room and at the school gate. In recognition of this, HTSC are encouraging us to arrange lots of socials (which we do anyway). The difference is that, under the HT @ Home umbrella, we can now turn these into mini HT fundraisers by asking guests to make a donation to school via the new online page.

Some lovely events are bubbling away in support of our efforts to raise £5,000 for an overhaul of student computers at HT. To reach our target, it would be wonderful to see more HT@Home events in the coming weeks and months. Please think about how you might be able to raise a little cash for this important venture - could you host a Pimms evening for your HT friends, or a dinner party, or a girl's pamper night? If you have any queries, or simply wish to chat through an idea, please contact nataliesavage@me.com.

Please keep checking our designated online fundraising page to see how our fundraising efforts are going against target. Our children might be interested to see the page too, for every penny raised will go to improving computers at school mydonate.bt.com/events/htathome/208773
