Infant 1/5/15

01 May 2015

Dear Parents,

Being in my last term is, in some ways, a tricky situation. Everything becomes tightly focused and my personal targets need to be achievable and short term. I am working really hard to continue to make a difference to the children and whole school community. Here are some of the issues which I am addressing:

• Children’s handwriting - I believe that this could be better throughout the school and so we have started a handwriting revolution. This includes everyone being well aware of our handwriting style: cursive, all letters join except capitals and a particular form for f, x, z and s. Letters formed carefully always starting with lead-in strokes from the bottom of the line, numbers starting from the top. We will encourage some children in Year 2 to use a pen and more in Years 3 and 4. By Year 5 all children will be using handwriting pens and we will introduce fountain pens to Year 6.

• Introducing laptops for some children with particular needs.

• Working on stress reduction throughout the school community. Nationally, 64% of teachers have visited their GPs with stress or stress-related illnesses. I am passionate as head about making teaching an enjoyable and fulfilling job at HTPD. I am therefore, pleased that the stress levels are much lower than in most schools. This leads to happy teachers and in turn to children with an enjoyment of school and learning. I will be doing more work with staff on this area and attempt to enable them to achieve a good work/life balance.

Another of my targets this term is to help Clare put in place more elements of our Christian distinctiveness. For the rest of this term, please come to see me if you want to discuss any current issues, secondary schools or your child’s learning ,health and welfare. Please see Clare if you want to talk about any matters pertaining to your child’s future from next term onwards.

Have a great long weekend! I am going on a pilgrimage along the St. Swithuns Way - Winchester to Farnham.

With best wishes, Richard

Bank Holiday
Please remember that the school is closed next Monday 4 May for the May Day Bank Holiday. We hope the sun shines and that you enjoy a lovely time with your children.

Thank you
An enormous ‘thank you’ to Hana Simpson (Liam’s mum, Y2) and Skipton Building Society for all their hard work at the Wild Place last Saturday. Year 2 had a fantastic time on Tuesday exploring the new sensory garden, admiring the tidy paths and designing dinosaur habitats in the sunshine. Skipton Building Society have been extremely generous in supporting this project. They will be hosting another working party on Saturday 30 May with the added incentive of enjoying a barbeque afterwards. Please put the date in your diary as many hands make light work!

Perform Workshops

The children have been inspired by a visit from Emily of Perform Theatre Workshops this morning. Emily encouraged them to join in with her circus theme and they had lots of fun going on an adventure to save the Perform circus.

We will be talking to the children about the General Election, and the Year 6 candidates are hoping to visit Year 2 and explain their election manifestos before the children get a chance to vote. We will let you know the result once the votes are counted.

Recycle Challenge
This week Recycle Man has challenged Beech Class to use plastic bottles to create something useful or beautiful as part of our assembly series this term. Please bring in your creations on Thursday or Friday next week.

Lost property
We have a quantity of un-named lost property, mainly from Year 2, on the benches near the lower entrance. Please re-claim any lost items.
