Infant 17/5/13

17 May 2013

Dear Parents

One of the high points of this week for me was showing a new group of parents around Pewley Down. As always it was brimming with life with happy and engaged children learning in a safe and supportive atmosphere. The group of parents were just blown away by the experience and this was even without our fabulous Year 2’s who were meeting Tyrannosaurus Rex at the Natural History Museum.

There has been a slight delay in publishing the Ofsted report due to the May bank holiday. We now expect to send it out, along with a letter from me, on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. We will follow this up with a parents’ meeting after half term to talk through the findings. I’ll announce the date for that next week too.

In the meantime, we are today publishing the results of the recent questionnaire to parents. I have just looked at the results compared to last year and to be honest they are virtually identical. The only significant change is in the scores for dealing with bullying and children’s behaviour which have both improved this year. The other difference is that we included ‘don’t know’ on the graphs. Please follow this link to view the results. I think next year we may do a more focused questionnaire on a particular subject area or feature of school life.

Speaking of questionnaires I am so grateful to all the parents who logged on to the ‘Parentview’ section of the Ofsted web site before the inspection – a stunning two hundred in twenty four hours (compared to 141 returns for HT and 79 for PD for our questionnaire). You can log in at any time for either school and complete the simple list of questions. It would be great if we now had a large number of Pewley Down parents responding.

As a staff your child’s safety, happiness and progress are three things which are at the heart of what we strive to achieve. I am pleased that so many of you agree that your children are experiencing this during their time here. Nearly all our visitors remark on the happy atmosphere and positive engagement of the children. It really is a great place to work and I feel very privileged to be a part of it.

With very best wishes, Richard

MUFTI: Monday 20 and Friday 24 May
Children can come to school in their own clothes (mufti) on Monday, 20th and bring in donations for the Summer Fair (see FOPs section below).  Fluffy Friday, 24th will also be a mufti day.

Jeremy Strong visit, Tuesday 4 June
Years 1 and 2 will be going to Holy Trinity on Tuesday afternoon (4 June) to listen to author Jeremy Strong.  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet such a well-known author. There is no charge for the actual event but children will be able to buy a signed copy of Jeremy Strong’s new book “My brother’s famous bottom gets crowned”.  If you would like to buy the book please send in £6.00 to the office (in an envelope marked with child’s name and class) by next Friday 24 May and include a post-it note with details of who the book should be signed to.

Golden Boot Challenge
We will be taking part in the Golden Boot Challenge again this year.  The aim is to encourage ‘greener’ travel to school eg walking, car sharing, park a little way from school and walk, cycling and using scooters. Today was ‘baseline day’ when children record their usual mode of travel to school.  We will use the online chart to record the information again on Friday 7, 14, 21 and 28 June and the class with the highest number of ‘green’ travellers at the end of the challenge will be awarded the ‘Golden Boot’.

Good luck and very best wishes to Hannah (Beech Class teacher) who is getting married on Saturday 25 May.

Thank you to Angela in Willow Class who is leaving us at half-term to return to university; Reception have loved having her.

Sainsbury’s ActiveKids vouchers
The ActiveKids scheme is coming to an end next Wednesday 22 May.  If you shop at Sainsbury’s please bring in any vouchers you may still have at home; the collection box is outside the hall near the office.

Summer Fair
Jolly Jars & Bottles: We would be very grateful if donations towards the Summer Fair could be brought into school on Monday 20 May.  The children may come to school in mufti on this day.  We would love to receive donations of the following:

lots of Jolly Jars (standard size jam jars filled with sweets & small toys) .  These are always very popular so as many as you can manage please!  Help, what's a Jolly Jar?

bottles for the bottle tombola - anything from champagne to squash, from olive oil to bubble bath!

Raffle Tickets:  You will find raffle tickets in your child's book bag today.  We would be very grateful if you could sell the tickets to family and friends.  However please do not let your children sell tickets door-to-door as children under 16 are not permitted to buy or sell tickets.  There are some fantastic prizes on offer including a Wii console and games, a £50 Boden voucher, tickets for G Live, a £50 Pizza Express voucher, a manicure from PG Nails , a piece of Stella & Dot jewellery and more.  Please return all money, counterfoils and unwanted raffle tickets to the school office by Friday 7 June.  Extra raffle tickets are available from the School Office if you would like more.

Computer Game Auction:  We also have 9 copies of “Most Wanted” (age rated 7) for the X Box, PC & PS VITA which retail at £22.99.  We will be accepting sealed bids up until the raffle draw on 9 June with the games going to the highest bidders.  If you would like to bid for a game, please write your name, telephone number, format required & bid amount on a piece of paper and leave it in an envelope marked “Most Wanted” at the School Office.

Set Up for the Fair:  We are looking for volunteers to help on the weekend of 7-9 June with setting up the Summer Fair.  Many hands make light work and there are lots of jolly jars to be numbered, gazebos to put up and stalls to set up.  If you are able to help, please let your class rep or Emily Bourke (emilybourke@msn.com) know.  We need helpers on  Friday evening (7pm to 9pm), Saturday afternoon (3pm to 5.30pm) and Sunday morning (10am -12pm).  We would also be very grateful if helpers could stay around after the fair finishes at 2pm for clearing up.

Playground Lolly Sale
Next Friday there will be a playground lolly sale organised by Walnut Class.

Phil the Bag
If you are clearing out your cupboards for the summer, please consider donating all your unwanted clothes and shoes to school.  We will be having a Phil the Bag collection on Monday 17 June.

Lost:   Rohan Sabharwal, Willow Class, has lost his Keller sweatshirt.
