Junior 20/3/15

20 March 2015

Dear parents

I’m sitting writing this at 1.45 with beautiful blue skies – such a shame it wasn’t like this four hours ago. My son Ollie in Leicester just texted to say the eclipse was amazing. I guess most of you will have had the cloudy experience we had. However at both schools we made the very best of the weather and gave the children the full HTPD eclipse experience. At Holy Trinity and Pewley Down we had children acting as the Moon, Sun and Earth and noting the point where the moon blocked the sun’s rays. Then we went outside and experienced the huge temperature drop and the light becoming like twilight. Yesterday, led by parent Liz Pomeroy, over a hundred juniors made pinhole cameras and were poised to use them this morning. However they were thwarted by the clouds. I have just tried one out in the bright sun and it works well you just need to get the angle correct. So it ended up a successful time, followed by a great fluffy Friday.

The different activities were tremendous and I do hope your child enjoyed their day. At PD there was: Walk On The Downs, Hockey, Rugby, Easter Craft, Making Easter Eggs, Construction, iPods, Pond Dipping and Gardening. At HT there was: Dens On the Downs, K-Nexions (construction), Bike Skills, Hockey, Behind The Scenes At the Yvonne Arnaud, 3 Course Meal, Marvelous Monet (and Klint), Easter Egg Hunt Around Guildford, Easter Crafts, Movie Maker, Reg Dolls, Creative Writing, ManiPedi, Pewley Playmates, Wacky Web Pages, Football, Journalism, Zumba and Eclipse (including a visit to the Astronomy Department at the University.

So lots of possibilities and the greatest part of the day is when we get to share with each other our results. I hope to get two fluffy Fridays into next term so more children will, get more opportunities.

I do hope you have a great weekend and enjoy the sun!! (grrr)

With best wishes, Richard

Dates for your diary:
Monday 24 March – Easter Hop Disco (see HTSC section below)
Thursday 26 March – Easter Garden (see below)
Thursday 26 March – Film Night (see below)
Friday 27 March – School closes at 1.45pm for Easter holidays

We have noticed that some children are making inappropriate choices for lunch. For example, some only take small amounts of carrots and sweetcorn for example, from the salad bar, and nothing else, despite being asked several times by the catering staff to choose extra items. It is important our children select a plate of food that is balanced and includes the main food groups – protein, carbohydrate, vegetables and dairy (if suitable). Food groups are labelled. Please talk to your children about their food choices and the importance of a healthy, well-balanced lunch.

Easter Gardens
We will be making Easter Gardens at school during lunch break on Thursday 26 April. Please download a copy of the materials/instructions here (a hard copy is available from the office). Please note that the children need to bring their materials to school to assemble the garden, no sweets please!

Congratulations to both the Year 5 and Year 6 netball teams who both won the Guildford Schools' Tournament last Saturday. The Year 6 team now progresses to the County Finals in April. Good luck to the Year 5's in the St. George's Tournament tomorrow.

Cross Country
Fantastic running by all of our girls in the St. Catherine's cross-country on Tuesday; In year 3, Sophie Robinson got a bronze medal, in year 4 Lucy Harrison got a silver and the team got overall silver, in year 5, Ayla Darcy got gold and Meg Miller got bronze and the team got gold overall and in year 6, Eliza Sutton got silver and the team got overall silver.

County Finals
Well done to all of the boys and girls who participated in the Sportshall and Dodgeball County Finals at the Surrey Sports Park yesterday. It was an extremely energetic afternoon with much running, jumping, throwing and Dodging! Lots of fun was had by all and both teams secured fourth positions out of twelve teams in each event from across Surrey.

Apologies, there will be no year 6 netball on Tuesday due to a fixture. There will be Lacrosse for year 5 and 6 on Thursday with Hannah.

Easter Film Night
HTSC invites the children in all the year groups to an Easter Film Night for a screening of Paddington on Thursday 26th March. Straight after school from 3.30pm– 5.30pm. Tickets will be £3.50. All profits to be split between Year 6 and the Action Duchenne national charity that aims to find a cure for Duchenne, a severe genetic muscle wasting disease which mainly affects boys. Ticket booking forms should have come home with your children this week. Otherwise they are available from the office. Please return them with your money by Tuesday 24th March. Thank you! Year 6 reps.

Settle accounts for financial year end: Please settle your school accounts by Monday so we can close accounts for the financial year end (but don’t worry, credit will carry forward). Grateful for your help in this – have a Happy Easter! Lesley and Flora.

HT @ Home
Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm for HT @ Home already! Many of us socialise with people we've met via this school, with the friends we make in the class room and at the school gate. In recognition of this, HTSC are encouraging us to arrange lots of socials (which we do anyway). The difference is that, under the HT @ Home umbrella, we can now turn these into mini HT fundraisers by asking guests to make a donation to school via the new online page.

Please keep checking our designated online fundraising page to see how our fundraising efforts are going against target. Our children might be interested to see the page too, for every penny raised will go to improving computers at school. mydonate.bt.com/events/htathome/208773

Already we've heard of planned dinner parties and film nights, and we have two fabulous open invitation events scheduled as follows (thanks to organisers Elaine Fitzwater and Michele Miller respectively). Please come along:

HT@Home – Stop Press! Do you have a kite? If so please join us for a monster kite flying afternoon on the last day of term. Meet on Pewley Down on Friday 27 March from 2-3pm….bring your kite (and adults bring a flask of something warm and a picnic rug). Squash and biscuits will be available for children…DONATIONS ON THE AFTERNOON WILL BE COLLECTED FOR THE HT@HOME FUNDRAISING SCHEME. (Suggested donation £1 per child) How many kites can we get in the air at one time? ALL WELCOME for some end of term fun. Any queries please contact Elaine Fitzwaterepfitzwater@gmail.com

HT@Home – You’re Invited! You are welcome to join us for a walk on Blackheath on Tuesday 31 March for HT@Home. This is the first Tuesday of the Easter holiday. All welcome - children, parents, siblings, Easter holiday visitors and dogs! We'll meet in Blackheath car park at 2.30pm (directions below). Please bring a flask of your favourite drink and drinks for your children, and we'll provide cake and snacks in the car park at the start of our walk in return for a donation to HTPD!

To help with organisation, please advise if you are going to join us, and how many will be in your party. Please use the 'subject' 'HT @home' and email: michelec.miller@btinternet.com Looking forward to seeing you there - don't forget your donation! Directions: From the Percy Arms pub in Chilworth (GU4 8NP) take the road opposite the pub (Sampleoak Lane). Follow the road until you come to a crossroads. Turn left at the crossroads. You will find the car park at the end of this road.
