Infant 8/3/12

08 March 2013

Dear Parents

David Brailsford the visionary coach of the British Cycling Team at the Olympics developed the system of marginal gains. This involved him in breaking down and identifying all the aspects of the team’s performance and seeking to make a one per cent improvement in each aspect. The theory, which proved so successful, went on to say that when all of these one per cents are added together it will make a significant difference.

Alex Quigley who is an English subject leader from York has gone on to apply this theory to teaching and learning at his co-educational comprehensive school and sixth form college. This school is now named in the list of 100 top schools in the country. We are interested in applying this to our school in the primary setting.

Of course, we continue to work hard to teach slowly, deeply, thoroughly and carefully so that children can learn and succeed. We want all our children to be educated holistically as well as meeting the Ofsted standards of sustained and rapid progress. I believe this is possible. I think that marginal gains may help us in this quest. So here’s the next competition – please write in or Tweet us with two or three marginal gains which a primary school can make to improve pupil attainment and progress. There’s a a nice bottle of wine for the winner judged by Helen and me next Friday. Please Tweet @HTPDSchool or email richardr@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk.

Parents will be sorry to hear that after over twenty years of great service Judy Dickinson will be leaving us at the end of this term. We will be holding a reception for her on Thursday 21st March from 7-9pm. It would be great if some of you can come along and join in the celebration. Please let the office know if you would be able to come.

With best wishes, Richard

Music Curriculum Trail - 11, 12 &13 March, 9.15am
The curriculum trails are taking place next week: Monday 11th – Year 2, Tuesday 12th – Year 1, Wednesday 13th – Year R. Please drop your child off as normal so we can register them, then come back at 9.15am and collect them to share the curriculum trail together in the hall. There will be lots of activities based around music to show you how we teach the children in school and how it threads through all aspects of the curriculum. If you are unable to make it please let your class teacher know or maybe arrange for another parent to take your child round.

Red Nose Day - Friday 15 March
Please check your child’s book bag today for a letter with all the Red Nose Day information including what to bring and what to wear.

BBC Surrey - Monday 11 March
A few weeks ago Nicci Holliday (Rocco’s mum, Oak Class) came in to interview some of the children about what makes us happy. If you would like to hear some of their ‘happiness’ sound bites these will be broadcast on BBC Surrey on Monday 11th from 3.15pm.

Music Workshops – Thursday 14 March
Guildford Academy for Contemporary Music will be running musical workshops for all the children on Thursday morning.

PE Kit
Now that the weather is improving we try and get outside as much as possible for PE. Please could you therefore ensure that your child has their trainers in school at all times. They will also need to have joggers and shorts (for indoor PE).

Sock plea
Children often need a change of socks/tights because their own are either wet, dirty or missing altogether. As a result the office has almost completely run out of spare socks/tights. Please could you therefore return any that your child might have borrowed and if you have any spare socks (outgrown or no longer needed) we would love to have them.

Just a reminder that dogs are not allowed on the school premises (including the playgrounds and outdoor areas) at any time.
