Dear Parents and Carers,

As the Year 4 campers return home from their wonderful time away, and as Healthy Week comes to an end at the infants, I’m sure this weekend will be one of rest and relaxation! It was great to share the campfire singing with the Y4 children and as they reflected on their day, their over-riding thoughts were of community, team work, relying on one another and finding joy in every moment. The staff have worked so hard this week, together with plenty of sporty visitors and parent helpers to ensure a broad, full curriculum where children are given so many opportunities to “Learn to Live”. Huge thanks go to Julia Brown, our sports leader at Pewley for organising Healthy week so well. Sadly, she has decided to move on at the end of the term, pursuing an exciting career move - we are all so grateful for her boundless energy and organisation skills. She will be hard to replace!

I’m excited to announce next year’s teaching teams. The reception and the Year 3 teachers are already getting to know the new children, spending some time at our feeder infant schools and nurseries. Next year will look like this:

Clare Giles is currently working at HTPD as a SCITT trainee and will join the Y3 teaching team as an NQT in September, and Abigail Allen joins us from Bristol where she has previously been working in Year 2. We will also continue to have a number of part time staff working across the school. Please allow us to consider the best fit for each child, taking into account the huge number of important factors in ensuring a smooth transition in September. Any comments should be directed to me rather than to your child’s current teacher.

Following on from our E-safety update in last week's newsletter, it saddens me to have to bring to your attention an incident which has taken place this week which confirms our concerns about the game 'Fortnite'. A number of Year 6 pupils were recently contacted via a chatroom that is part of the platform and were subjected to unsuitable content by an unknown individual. Whether a real person or a phishing bot was behind the attack is questionable, but it is clear that a nefarious individual was responsible and should the incident not have been reported, the outcome could have been considerably worse. As such, I would like to reiterate that we consider that children should be supervised at all times when online and that Fortnite is not age-appropriate for primary school aged children.

Accommodation needed
We are hoping that a Spanish teacher from our partner school in Aguilar de Campoo is going to join our staff for a year from September. He is keen to live fairly locally and is ideally looking for some kind of self-contained accommodation. Please email Helen Pronger if you think you could help.

All school families are welcome to come and cheer for the children.

Vacancy – Clubs+
We are so sad that Amalfy will be leaving Clubs+ at the end of this term. She has been amazing as the Deputy Manager of Clubs+. We are now looking for a motivated After Schools Club Deputy to lead and develop Clubs+ from Monday to Friday between 3.00 and 6.00 pm (15 hours per week) at our Junior Site reporting to the Manager After Schools Club. Ideally we would like a teacher who is looking for a change or new challenge or an experienced Playworker (Level 3 qualified with at least a year’s experience) to plan interesting activities, provide a range of activities daily including outdoor play and opportunities to relax or do homework. Vacancy – Catering Assistant (immediate start)
Harrison’s catering are looking for a Catering Assistant to join the team at HTPD. The job includes assisting with the preparation of our fresh food offer and with serving customers, as well as with washing up and cleaning. The ideal candidate will not need any previous experience working in a busy catering environment, but must be able to work as part of a team. You will be rewarded with a competitive salary for working 20 hours per week (10.00am – 2.00pm daily), term time only. Golden Boot Challenge
Over the next four Fridays (8, 15, 22 and 29 June) we will be asking the children how they travel to school. Their usual mode of travel was recorded on the baseline day before half term, and we are hoping that they will try out ‘greener’ ways of travelling such as walking, scooting or parking further away and then walking. The class with the highest ‘green scores’ will win the Golden Boot trophy.

Friendship letters
Please return the form listing your child’s friends by next Friday, 15 June if you have not already done so. This information is used to help sort children into their classes for next year.

Club cancellations
There will be no Lego or Cup Stacking club on Tuesday 19 June owing to the Y2 trip.

Sports Day, Tuesday 26 June, 9.15am
Parents are invited to wait up on the field after morning drop-off on the 26th, and we aim to start the races at 9.15am. More details to follow.

Please bring in the following and place in the boxes in the playground. If you can’t make Monday, we will leave the boxes for a few days.

  • pre-loved toys, books and DVDs for our second-hand stall (in good condition without pieces missing!)
  • bottles (anything from ketchup to Cava) for our bottle tombola
  • bags of sweets and small toys for our ‘booty bag’ stall
  • goodies for raffle hampers as agreed with your class reps.

For your chance to win an Annual Family MERLIN Pass (and plenty of other great prizes), please return completed stubs and cheques to the school office with payment.

Don’t forget to mark your food preferences for our delicious Brazilian BBQ (gluten and nut free) or Indian vegetarian dish on the Board in the bottom playground asap or email laurasabster@yahoo.co.uk No name, or payment needed until the day but we need to gauge quantities. Please note that the BBQ is nut and gluten free.

Have you signed up to help on the day? Your class reps will have circulated lists. Please try to do a slot on one of the stalls if you can so that we can share the work and the fun! Unless you are involved with the bar or hot-food, children are usually able to accompany you and demonstrate the games!

We are still looking for:

Plans are well underway for the HTSC World Cup Summer Fair! This year the Fair promises to be a summer “round the world” extravaganza, with bottle and chocolate tombolas, jolly bags, delicious bar-b-q, bar serving Pimms and lemonade plus football games, lucky dip, candy wheel and lots, lots more.
To make all this happen we really need your HELP! Please look out for the parentmails about the Fair next week which will have sign-up details for volunteering on stalls and all the information about donations. This is our last major fundraiser of the year, so please sign up if you can - we can’t do it without you!

The Year 6 fundraising team are organising a film night next Thursday 14 June straight after school. Tickets are £4 each and include popcorn, a drink, plus a raffle ticket for the chance to win the Greatest Showman on DVD.

Sign-up forms were distributed to the children this week and need to be returned to the HT office by Tuesday 12 June. Pick up will be from the HT main hall at 5.20pm.

Just a reminder for those of you who took part in the HTPD Fun Run that the closing date for submitting your sponsorship is Friday 29 June.

"Castle Quest!" - Christ Church's Castles and Dragons and Knights themed Holiday Club for 2018 is now open for bookings. The usual fun, crafts, bible stories, games and the famous water balloon sacrifice is back for another year! It runs from Wed 25th July to Sat 28th July, 10am to 1.30pm.
The big difference this year is that because we are doing building work at Christ Church, we are going to be based at Tormead Junior school who have very kindly let us take over for the week!
