Junior 21/6/13

21 June 2013

Dear Parents

I have just been reading an article about Jack Andraka, you may have heard the name. He is a fifteen and has discovered a near 100 per cent accurate test for pancreatic cancer that diagnoses early enough to ensure an almost 100 per cent chance of survival. Currently this form of cancer has only a five per cent chance of survival. Apparently the test is 400 times more sensitive, 168 times faster and 26,000 times cheaper costing only 2 or 3p a time!

It is a great story and he describes himself as an ‘ordinary kid’ from Crownsville, Maryland. After a chequered primary school career based around soaking his teacher with a water bomb, he became a ‘straight A’ student at secondary school – a ‘bad’ state school on the city borders. He had a passion for science and something else: “I guess it’s how you use information. It’s about creativity rather than facts. I’m a creative thinker. My parents never told me answers. They told me now to think not what to think. I disagree with our bulimic education system: learning by rote and then puking up all the facts in an exam”.

It reminds me of a letter from a former parent I received urging us not to be deflected from our creative curriculum. He has just been awarded an MBE for services to further education. His daughter received History and Gladstone prize from Cambridge University. She now has an MSc from the LSE and is working for the radical think-tank Demos. His son is in the middle of a Cambridge degree but took time out to work for the Obama campaign and is now heading to Geneva as an intern for the WHO.

He told me that they considered Holy Trinity School to be one of the most profound influences on the education of both children.

I’m hoping that in future years we will hear of more great young people doing great things like Jake Andraka. I also hope that like Josephine and Phelim some of them will be from Holy Trinity Pewley Down where we aim to teach how to think and not what to think.

At the end of this school year we will be saying goodbye to two of our teachers. Rosie Welch and Tracey Dowse are both leaving us to take up promotions in other schools. Rosie is going to be Deputy Head in a church school in Norfolk and Tracey is going to be second in charge in an infant school in the Dorking area. We will write much more about their great contribution later in the term.

I thought you would like to know the class teachers for 2013/14:
