HTPD 13/7/18

13 July 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we completed our transition visits, with the children at Pewley enjoying a second morning meeting their new classmates, and the junior school children finding out who they’d be working with next year. All of the children have impressed me by their ability to “embrace the future with hope and confidence.” Smiling, they headed off to meet their new teachers and next year’s learning partners. It was great to witness their relaxed, optimistic and calm approach to change.

Next week we will be sharing with our Year 2 and Year 6 families the joys and poignancy of moving on. It’s always a special time as children say goodbye to their infant and junior school; we’ll be looking back as well as looking ahead to their exciting futures. Parents, do come along if you can to their leaving services (10am on Tuesday at St Mary’s for Y6; 9.30am on Wednesday at Pewley for Y2). For some families, it marks the end of an era with final children heading off to secondary school – some have been part of our school community for around 15 years! We’ll also be saying our farewells to some long-serving staff next week. Julia Brown and Rebecca Plaistowe have been part of the place for a very long time! We’re so grateful to them both, and to others who leave us at the end of term.

As well as the special assemblies next week, we’d love to see all of you at Celebration Afternoon (Monday 1.30pm at PD, 2pm at HT). It’s a chance for you to see what the children have been working on this term as well as popping along to visit your child’s new classroom. In addition, if you have any questions following your reading of your child’s report, do speak to their current teacher if you’d like. Having read all the reports, I must congratulate the children on a superb year. I especially enjoyed hearing how well our school values are lived out, and how so many children have flourished since last September, definitely “Learning to Live”!

With Year 6 currently taking part in this year’s Trinity Trek, the stunning success at this year’s District Sports, and the Year 3 tea party just taking place earlier in the week, I’m reminded of how many different opportunities each child is given to live life to the full. Please do join me in thanking the staff for making this possible!

Enjoy the weekend!
With best wishes, Clare

No Nuts Reminder
Please do remember that both schools are nut-free to keep those children with nut allergies safe. It came to my attention this week that some parents had forgotten to check that snacks and packed lunches were nut free. Thank you for your support in this matter.

We hope you’ve all had a great year at Pewley Down and would like to thank you for all your support and encouragement. Next week will be the final newsletter of the year and we’ll be giving you the total we have raised from all our playground sales and fundraising events and initiatives.

Due to other commitments some of the existing committee (including the current chairs) will have to step down next year. If we are to continue raising money for our school and providing vital resources as well as some lovely ‘extras’ for our children, then we urgently NEED:

A chairperson or chair-people! Please have a think if you and some friends can take on this incredibly rewarding role. The current committee have promised to be on standby to answer questions and help out as much as possible. If you’d like an informal chat about what the role involves, please contact Laura: laurasabster@yahoo.co.uk (ABSOLUTELY NO PRESSURE!!)

Class reps: thanks to those who have already been in touch about being class reps next year but we need more across all classes. This is a great way of meeting new people and getting involved with our events and activities. Most people will want to have a turn at being rep at some point during their time at Pewley so make this your year! No previous experience needed!

Tuesday 17th July – coffee morning at Caffe Nero (House of Fraser)
Year 1
A huge thanks to Cath and Rob for hosting Beech and Oak class at their home last week and raising yet more money for the school. Thanks too to Annette for hosting the final coffee morning.
Year 2
Year 2 have had a very busy time preparing their beautiful Year Book and organising the exciting leaving events for your children. Thank you to Emily and Rebecca and everyone else involved with making this such a special experience for our young graduates.

Don’t forget you can find out more about what’s happening by visiting us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FOPSFriendsofPewleyDownSchool/

A huge thank you to all for your support again this year. We have had some brilliant events - a sell-out Bingo evening, a spectacular Bonfire Night, a Lion King themed Christmas Fair, a World Cup Summer Fair, a record breaking HTPD Fun Run not to mention the fabulous Masquerade Ball. You have bought tea-towels, filled Smarties tubes, baked cakes and "Philled" the bag, as well as coming along to offer your time to make all our events run as well as they have done. THANK YOU!

We are adding up all the money raised this year and hope to have what promises to be a dazzling 2017/18 total for next week's final newsletter.

Now you know which class your child is in next year, perhaps you might consider taking on the role of class rep? The support from this team of volunteers is particularly important when it comes to organising our main events, as HTSC really wouldn’t function without them. We are looking for volunteers from ALL year groups and need at least 6 reps per year.

If you would like to know more about what the role involves or volunteer your services, please contact Ros Vickerman rosalindvickerman@yahoo.com.

We are looking for a new chair or co-chairs to take over running HTSC from September. Can YOU help? It’s a great opportunity to get involved with the school community, raise funds, organise social events and make a real difference to the educational possibilities offered by the school. If you think this is a role you would be interested in taking on, please contact Ros Vickerman rosalindvickerman@yahoo.com for more details.

HTSC’s AGM will take place in the Chapel on Thursday 13 September straight after the HT meet the team evening. We will be receiving this year’s accounts and electing the new Committee members for the next academic year.

Katie Ealden, 4R, is going to walk the full marathon (26 miles/42.2 km) organised by the Surrey Hills Challenge on Sunday 23rd September. It will be a long and hilly trek with 1272.8 metres of climb and Katie has to finish within ten hours. The main aim is to raise money for whiteboards so every class can have one. Please support Katie https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ditastaton1. Every pound counts! Thank you
