Junior 12/7/13

Dear Parents,

Well this week we had two important visitors at the junior school. The first was Her Majesty’s Inspector to see how we were making progress following the recent Ofsted report and the other were the 96 new entrants to the juniors including the 60 children from Pewley Down. It was interesting because both visitors came on the same day.

The HMI was tasked with making a judgement on the school leaders and governors regarding their capacity to make progress, as Ofsted defines it, for all the children in the school. He told us that as leaders we were working swiftly to bring about change which can quickly lead to a good or better judgement by a subsequent Ofsted re-inspection. This along with our good SATS scores puts us in a strong position to achieve this judgement well before the usual two years. It is our plan to have a trial inspection from our HMI in March or May followed by the formal Ofsted inspection in July or September after the SATS results are received. In the meantime we will continue to keep you in touch with proposed developments in the school. I am planning to have a short meeting for all parents in HTPD very near the beginning of next term. I will give the date of this next week when we have looked carefully at our diaries.

The other visitors included a large group who weren’t visitors at all, but members of our school already. It was a real pleasure to have our 60 year twos joined by 36 other year twos at the school for Wednesday and Thursday. We then met the parents of all those children yesterday evening. The new year two children did really well and learnt about the school and where everything was. They joined with their Year 5 buddies to finish a project about Dragons. This was a great session with children three years apart in age cooperating, working and enjoying each others company.

We are all looking forward to all next year will bring. We know we will have a wonderful new group of children and hope for well-deserved Ofsted success.

Open Afternoon
Another important date for your diaries is Wednesday 17th July, 2:45pm. This is when you will have the opportunity to come and look at the fantastic work your children have been doing, speak to the teacher and see their new class.

District Sports

We had a fantastic afternoon of athletics on Friday in the glorious sunshine. It was so lovely to see so many children from across seven schools in Guildford all competing and doing their best. Well done to all of the children involved; year 4, 5 and 6 came first and year 3 came third. A big thanks to all of our supporters too!

School Sports Kit
Please can you check if you have any school sports kit and return it to school, thanks.

School cups and Awards
A reminder to all parents of last year's Year 6, please could you make sure all of the cups and trophies are returned next week.

Sports Day
On Tuesday 16th July we have our School Sports Day.  The children will all participate and the house captains have been very busy ensuring that everyone is involved.  We really appreciate your support.  The afternoon will start at 1.30pm and is due to finish by normal close of the day at 3.15pm. Please do make sure that your child comes in with their full PE kit including their house top so that we can all cheer loudly for each house.  Whilst we are unable to give exact timings for each race the running order is sprints, middle distance, long distance, hurdles then relays.  The weather is set to stay fair so the children will also need to bring hats, sun cream and plenty of water (no glass bottles please).  We look forward to an exciting afternoon!

House Swimming Gala
Our House Swimming Gala will take place on Friday 19th July.  It will be at St. Catherine’s School in Bramley.  We will leave school at 1pm, warm-up will start at 1.30pm and the gala will start at 2pm.  We aim to finish by 3.15pm.  We will involve as many children as we can and all of the children who are participating will bring a letter home this week. 

Please may we remind you to park your car safely and considerately to the local residents and other road users by not parking across driveways making it impossible for residents to access their driveways.

PTA (HTSC) Reminders

A big thank you to all of you for your help and support at the summer fair. It was a great evening. Initial figures suggest that we raised almost £4000 which is excellent. If anyone has any feedback/suggestions for improvements next time please let us know.

HTPD Business Directory
HTSC  is launching a new initiative to help to raise funds for the school whilst also helping the parent community to promote their business. We will be launching the HTPD Business Directory by the end of term. It will have a dedicated area on the website and be divided into different categories in alphabetical order – e.g. Accounting and Financial Services, Childminding, Cleaning Services, Gardening, IT Services, Legal Services, Marketing, Painting & Decorating, Photography etc.  A company or sole trader can have their organisation’s name, telephone number and website address mentioned – we are not able to include company logos.

Any parent who currently has or previously had a child at HTPD is eligible to include their details in our directory – for an introductory fee of £10 per school year (sign up by end term July 24th).  Please note, this is a business listing - and the school is not endorsing or recommending any of the businesses listed – but hopefully it will generate work for our parent community.

If you would like your business to be included in the directory, please download and fill out the attached form and leave it, with the payment, at the school office. We’d like to get this up and running before the end of term – and anyone who pays before then will be eligible to keep their business listing on the website until July 2014. BEC-Art Classes for 7 -12 year olds will be starting again on Saturday 7 September 2013 for 9 weeks. 9.30-11.30am class (9-12years), 11.45-1.45pm (7-10years). 9 week term of 2 hour classes costs £145, of 1 and half hours costs £120 or 1 hour classes cost £95.  All materials included. Drop-in classes also available.
