Junior 23/1/15

23 January 2015

Dear Parents,

Huge congratulations to Ayla who was first in the County Cross Country race. There were almost 280 girls competing in the run and it was a fine achievement. Many other of our years 4, 5 & 6 also did very well with good placings. Ayla is part of a young athletes group and trains hard to be so successful – she also has a great attitude to her success – happy to talk about it and also modest.

I’m reminded of St Paul’s words when he wrote to the Christians in Rome. He said suffering (training) produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

I have been thinking about character this week. My oxford dictionary defines it as strength and originality, but I guess it goes much deeper than that. The government have made five million pounds available for the promotion of character in schools (I would guess that money is a gift from an anonymous donor). A little of the money is going into a competition where schools and other educational institutions can nominate themselves as centres of character excellence. The bulk of the rest is for training institutions to bid for long grants to develop teaching materials and trial them with children. I am considering writing a joint bid with Guildford Diocese for the training grant and entering the school for the competition. This school shines with individuals and groups who have great character, perseverance and hope.

With best wishes, Richard

Sainsbury’s Vouchers - Yes, it’s that time again! Please support HT, as you always do, and send in as many vouchers as you can. Gillian is very grateful and, once collected and counted, the vouchers allow her to exchange them for lots of child-friendly equipment that the children use during break/lunch times. Thank you.

Holiday PUPS - for PUPS+ (at Half Term) to be a viable proposition for the school, we need to have at least 10 children booked in each day. Please let Sam Andrews (pups@pewleydown.surrey.sch.uk) know on or before the 30th January if you wish to book a place. If we do not reach 10 on a particular day, we will be forced to cancel that day. A decision will be made on Monday the 2nd February and parents will be contacted to advise them that the session has been cancelled and that their cheques will be returned.

Cross-country - Well done to all of our runners who participated in the Surrey Schools Cross-country last Saturday on a beautiful sunny crisp morning. It was the biggest field ever with 271 runners in the girls 4/5 race and 250 runners in the boys 4/5 race. The girls team managed a very creditable 6th place out of 33 teams and we have a new county champion in Ayla who ran a brilliant race. The boys also had a great performance with Michael achieving 8th place. In the older groups Eliza also managed a top ten place out of the 181 runners participating.

Netball - Good luck to the year 5 girls who are participating in the Rydes Hill Netball Tournament tomorrow. Apologies, there will be no Year 6 netball club on Tuesday as we have a St. Bede’s football/netball fixture.

Sportshall Athletics - Congratulations to the year 4 girls and boys who won the Guildford schools Sportshall Athletics competition yesterday at the Spectrum. It is a lovely event involving 9 local schools and it was a very tight finish with Holy Trinity securing first place by just 4 points. Lots of fun for all involved.

House Football - Next week we will be doing our second house event involving all of our children. Please could we remind everyone that full PE kit including house tops are needed in school next week. As it is very cold at the moment, please could all of the children have their school sweatshirts and tracksuits bottoms or leggings in school for our PE sessions.

Head Lice - Unfortunately we have this pest back in school. For up to date information on how to recognise and treat these insects please visit www.nhs.uk/conditions/Head-lice. PLEASE check your child's hair EVERY day, comb through from scalp to the ends of their hair thoroughly using a nit comb or fine-toothed comb if possible. If in doubt, please shampoo the hair and apply conditioner whilst the hair is wet. Leave it on for 10 minutes then comb through again. This should bring the lice away from the strands of hair. Don’t forget to wash the comb before re-using. Several treatments may be necessary, not forgetting to include every member of the family.

Keys - We have had 2 bunches of keys in the office for a very long time now. One set is for a VW Renault car and the other is for a front door. If you think you may have lost them and know who did, please come to Reception. Thank you.

Years 5 & 6 Cake Sale – Friday 30 January

We will be holding a cake sale for Years 5 & 6 on Friday 30 January so please send in cakes/biscuits, things like fairy cakes/flapjacks etc. No nuts please. The children love the cake sales so please do try and send cakes in on Friday so that there are enough to go around.

The cakes are sold to the children during school time in the afternoon. Each cake costs 25p so we suggest you send your child in with 50p - £1.00. If you want your container returned please mark clearly - they will be left at the bottom of the ramp for collection.

We are also looking for helpers on the day, from 1:15 we need a few people to set up and then sell the cakes, if there are any cakes left over we sell them after school. Offers of help to Caroline Swift caroline@swifts.me.uk
