Dear Parents,

Greetings from a rainy and chilly Holland. I am here on a two day visit to The British School of the Netherlands to set up a partnership and look carefully at what makes them a highly successful school. The BSN is a school from Foundation 1 - three years plus - to the end of year six. There is also a secondary school. It has been a real privilege visiting every classroom and making suggestions and gleaning good practice. So far I have seen very high quality work in year six, where iPads are widely in use. Creative writing is submitted to teachers who then can make a mini video as means of response marking. One boy had made an outstanding film bringing together his creative writing and film skills to create a great piece of work. It took him three months! There is excellent practice throughout the school and I am sure that there will be a great deal to be gained by children, teachers and parents alike as we start to share in a variety of ways. One early initiative would be to have the school councils having a video linked meeting. This is something we cannot do with our Comenius partners due to language difficulties.

The school also enjoys working closely with parents as we do. There is coffee morning once a week after drop off and parents are encouraged to popularise any causes or initiatives they are involved in. That reminds me of an exciting initiative we are hoping to do soon. We are going to invite dads to come in for ten or twenty minutes after drop off and read with the children. We hope this will be a good role model, especially for boys, and further increase the love and joy which we find in reading.

Right, I am off now to visit years 1 to 4 and see what else I can find out. The very occasional visit such as this always makes me excited at the good and creative things I find out, but also makes me aware of what an enthusiastic and excellent school we have in HTPD with great staff, responsive children, wise governors and partnership with parents. Lost Property
We have a mountain of unnamed lost property at the bottom of the stairs in year 4. Please come and collect any items you might have missing as we will be clearing it out of school next Friday. Please remember to name all clothing. Thank you.

The BBC Radio 500 Word Story Competition has been launched this week. If anyone is interested in entering go to https://500words.external.bbc.co.uk/opportunity/1 to find out more. I am happy to help during Creative Writing on Thursdays, or if there is sufficient interest to run a dedicated writing group on Monday lunchtimes. If interested contact Geraldine.

After 2 weeks in operation, around 20% of Holy Trinity children have had lunches paid on ParentPay. Don’t forget, you can use your account to check when your child is taking meals and see your lunch account balance at any time. Contact Lesley in the finance office with any queries, or if you need another printout of your login details.

All school lunches taken are being logged using the online ParentPay system now, which has necessitated some reorganising of the dining room queues. Children taking school lunch queue alphabetically in their classes and the alphabet is followed in ascending and descending order on alternate days for the sake of fairness. Overall, the queuing is much quicker and more orderly. Children having packed lunches do not queue.

What a great challenge our runners had last Saturday in the mud at Reigate Priory. We had some cracking races and all of our runners made a fantastic effort. Congratulations to the boys team of Charlie Kefford, Michael Naisby, Joe Fuller and Finn Doyle who as a team secured 1st place out of 21 teams in the Year 4/5 race. The girls team of Eliza Sutton, Freya Clift, Ayla Darcy and Hebe Poole also achieved a top 3 place out of 22 teams.

Two great matches at St. Catherine's this week saw some great playing by our year 6 girls. The first team won 12-2 and the second's lost in the last quarter 3-6. Great teamwork! Good luck this Saturday to the Year 5 girls at the Rydes Hill Tournament.

Apologies, there will be no netball club this week after school on Monday and Tuesday due to fixtures. Please could all of the school netball kit be returned next week, thanks.

Swimming - Well done to the swimmers who took part at the Guildford and District Schools Swimming Association Gala.

House Music – There will be a performance to Houses on Tuesday 28 January.


Mad March Ball
Thanks to everyone who requested tickets for the ball, we sold out in record time. We are still finalising the numbers with the hotel so will confirm to everyone who requested tickets in the next few days including those on the reserve list.

Auction Items Needed
We have already had some fantastic offers from parents but we still need more auction items if we are to meet our target. We know you are a talented lot! Please have a think about any talents or skills you have which you could offer for us to auction. For example, do you play an instrument or speak a foreign language or coach a sport or have a talent for garden / home design? Also, do you know of anyone with a holiday home for use or a local business or employer who might be able to donate an item for auction or provide sponsorship. Do you have any links to professional sport or the world of entertainment? Please put your thinking caps on and, if there's anything you can contribute, contact Ros Vickerman (jrvickerman@yahoo.co.uk). We need to have the final details of all prizes by 31 January so please could any offers be made by then.

Years 3 & 4 Cake Sale
We will be holding a cake sale for Years 3 & 4 on Friday 31 January so please send in cakes/biscuits, things like fairy cakes/flapjacks etc. No nuts please. At recent cake sales we have been short on cakes so please do try and send cakes in on Friday so that there are enough to go around. The cakes are sold to the children during school time in the afternoon. Each cake costs 25p so we suggest you send your child in with 50p - £1.00. If you want your container returned please mark clearly - they will be left at the bottom of the ramp for collection.

We are also looking for helpers on the day, from 1:15 we need a few people to set up and then sell the cakes, if there are any cakes left over we sell them after school. Offers of help to Sharon Craigie at sharoncraigie@hotmail.com.
