HTPD 26/2/16

26 February 2016

Dear Parents,

All the children came back from the half term break refreshed and ready to learn – with only a few weeks until the Easter holidays everyone seems very determined to work hard. I’ve been so impressed with the quality of poetry, art work, letter writing and number skills being sent to me for Headteacher’s awards. It’s one of the best aspects of my job, talking with children about why I’m proud of them, and also why they are proud of themselves.

It’s even more rewarding when a group of children arrive together – I love seeing how supportive of each other they are, how much pleasure they each derive from each other’s work and also how much they are encouraged by comments from their peers. Research shows that children learn more from each other than from adults! I’m sure it’s true.

In our assemblies this week, we’ve been looking at the importance of friends. We looked at the New Testament story of the disabled man who was lowered down through the roof of a house in order to meet Jesus who then healed him. Like him, without the help of our friends, our lives are less fulfilled. As a school, we place a huge emphasis on relationships with each other, learning how to be more supportive and kind to those around us.

That’s one of the reasons why during Book week we will be working in our house teams rather than in our usual class settings – it’s a good way of growing new friendships. I’m looking forward to next week’s newsletter when I can report on how the week goes. Do keep an eye on Twitter though for regular updates each day….and don’t forget to book your tickets for the Saturday night quiz, a chance to have an evening with friends!

With best wishes

Book Week, 29 February – 4 March
We are all looking forward to Book Week next week. Children will be working in their house groups all week, and house t-shirts are optional (children can either wear their house t-shirts with normal uniform bottoms or their usual school uniform).

On Friday, to celebrate World Book Day, staff and children will be dressing up as book characters.

World Book Day vouchers will also be distributed next week and there will be a small supply of the £1 books available for the children to ‘purchase’ with their voucher. These books are also available from Waterstones. The voucher may be used against any book in bookshops.

Year 2 swimming
There is no swimming on Wednesday 2 March as it is book week.

Parent Consultation meetings, Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 March
Please return your form for the parent consultation meetings by Monday 29 February, if you haven’t already done so.

Teacher-led club cancellations
  • There will be no Lego or Drawing Club next Wednesday 2 March as Sarah and Sheena are away on a course.
  • Owing to the parent consultation meetings there will be no teacher-led clubs in the week commencing Monday 7 March.

5th March HTSC EVENT
Tickets for the Quiz Night will be available from Monday (8th Feb). This is a great opportunity to enjoy an entertaining quiz and a wonderful Rajdoot curry. Put together a table of up to 8, or come along and join a team, but get your tickets while they are available as places are limited.

13th March Action Sunday in conjunction with Movie Sunday.
We are hoping to have a film afternoon at school between 2-4pm showing the film Paddington on the big screen in the hall. The film is free, but to raise funds for school we will be selling popcorn and squash for £2 per child.

Parents will need to supervise their child/children. If you are interested in coming along to the film please let Ali Fairbanks (Sophie’s mum Walnut), Leanna Donkin (Poppy’s mum Willow) or Sally Rolton (Marcus and Zach’s mum Walnut and Hazel) know (either in the playground or by email) as they will be issuing tickets to gain an idea on the amount of popcorn/squash.

This is also the same date as the Action Weekend where the school is hoping parents will put on their gardening gloves and help out to clear/tidy up the school grounds in readiness for Spring.
