Thought for the Week – Love is not jealous

Dear parents

A few little problems, including a very small leak in one corner has delayed our use of the Chapel. I am sure however we will be using it by next Friday.

Helen and I spent two days this week working with colleagues from Babcocks (SCC educational provision company) and South Farnham School interviewing and selecting students who want to become teachers and train through the Surrey scheme. There were sixty places available and candidates had to take a maths and English test as well as meeting quite stringent entry qualifications.

This may be a route some of you would like to take into teaching. I believe applications will be welcomed for starting in 2014, this Autumn. As well as a formal interview the candidates had to give a five minute presentation on the theme “I believe an outstanding teacher is……” We had a wide variety of styles and information offered and many did very well. Two of our TAs applied and they will receive the result next week. It is good for us to take part in this work as we are able to find excellent trainees to work with us and maybe get a teaching position eventually.

I thought it might be fun to see what you thought an outstanding teacher is. So we can have a little competition. Please email to richardr@holytrinity.surrey.sch.uk or tweet to @htpdschool with your ending to the sentence “I believe an outstanding teacher is….” There will be a nice bottle of wine for the one which Helen and I judge to be the one which most reflects the values, ethos and aspirations of HTPD and education at its best. We will make the decision by next Friday February 8th.

Have a good weekend.

Bedtime Story, Thursday 7 February, 5.15 – 6.00pm
Children are invited back to school at 5.15pm (in their pyjamas with sleeping bags/blankets and teddies in tow) to be read a bedtime story in their year group. FOPS will be providing cocoa and a biscuit for the children, as well as tea and coffee in the hall for those parents who want to stay and wait for their child. Second hand uniform will also be on sale in the hall.

Drama Club
There will be no Drama Club on Thursday 7 February as Rosie will be on a course.

Year 2 Information Evening, Tuesday 12 February, 7.30pm
Please let the office know if you are planning to come to the Year 2 information evening. This will be an opportunity to find out more about how writing and maths are taught in Year 2 – and should last about an hour.

Sainsbury’s vouchers
This year’s Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme has now started so please start collecting the vouchers – the collection box will be located outside the hall near the office. We are then able to redeem the vouchers for sports equipment for the school. We are very grateful to Sharon Ewer who has
co-ordinated the scheme for many years but, as she no longer has children at Pewley Down, we are now looking for a volunteer to take this on. Please contact the office if you could help with this.

Mattie Stemp, Chestnut, has lost two coats both labelled ‘Stemp’ – one is black with silver trim, the other is black with a grey fur hood.

Second Hand Uniform Sale: We will be holding a second hand uniform sale in the hall during the Bedtime Story on Thursday 7 February. Good condition, second hand uniform will be available at very reasonable prices and all proceeds go to the school. We are running low on stock so any donations of uniform would be gratefully received. Please leave donations with the School Office.

Year 1 Coffee Morning - Monday 4 February: Fiona Mercer (mum to Freddie) is hosting a coffee morning after drop off on Monday 4 February at 106 Addison Road. All year 1 parents are very welcome.

Hazel Class Night Out - Friday 8 February: There will be a night out for Hazel class parents at the Bar des Arts (opposite the Yvonne Arnaud) on Friday 8 February from 8pm.

Easyfundraising Find and Remind Service: Have you registered to raise money for the school with Easyfundraising.org.uk but keep forgetting to use it? We have discovered a great tool - the Find and Remind Service. You can use Find & Remind to search for easyfundraising retailers and it will automatically provide a handy drop-down reminder every time you visit one of the participating retailers' sites to make sure that you never forget to claim a donation. Click here to get the toolbar: http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/find-and-remind/

If you are not registered, Easyfundraising is a very simple way to raise money for the school which doesn't cost you a penny. It works in a similar way to many other loyalty shopping sites, but instead of earning points when you shop, you raise a donation for the school instead. You can shop with over 2,000 well known stores and each will donate up to 15% of what you spend. For example, John Lewis will donate 1%, Amazon 2.5%, The Body Shop 6%, some insurance retailers will even donate up to £30 simply for taking out a policy with them! If you haven't already done so, please consider registering and making Friends of Pewley Down Infant School your chosen charity.

Spring Term Cake Sales: After a faltering start due to the weather, the playground cake sales will be starting again. The dates for this term are:
Friday 1 February - Willow class
Friday 15 February - Walnut class
Friday 1 March - Childrens' Cake Sale - all classes to donate cakes - sale run by Year 1
Friday 8 March - Chestnut class
Friday 22 March - Hazel class
Thank you in advance for your contributions. Cake sales raise a significant amount of money and are a lovely Friday afternoon treat.

And finally ..... this year's Summer Fair will take place on 9 June 2013 from 12-2pm. Please put the date in your diaries
