Junior Newsletter

03 February 2012

Dear Parents,
At both schools this week, we have been thinking about the life and work of Helen Keller, one of our four house heroes. All four have been chosen as people who symbolise some virtue which we would wish our children to aspire to.
Helen was a normal little girl until she contracted scarlet fever or meningitis at the age of nineteen months. This left her deaf and blind.
At the age of seven, through the inventor Alexander Graham Bell, she met Annie Sullivan. Annie was to be her tutor, mentor, companion and friend for the next forty nine years. Through Annie’s skill and patience and Helen’s perseverance, Helen learnt signing for words on her hands. This gave her language and the ability to communicate.
Later, after obtaining a university degree, she learnt to speak and to understand what people were saying by touching their lips, Braille was a great help to her.
She spent her life making speeches and supporting various causes. She was an advocate for people with disabilities and also spoke about pacifism, woman’s suffrage, birth control and radical socialism.
She wrote books, met presidents and kings and led a full life which made a real difference to others.
Her faith, drive, perseverance and trust of others drove her life forward when others might have given in faced by such difficulties.
Helen is truly a hero and we hope our children will take on board her strengths and become people who’s lives make a positive difference to others.
With best wishes, Richard

Well done to our Year 5 netballers who enjoyed a great netball tournament last weekend.
They played 5 matches in total winning 3 and losing 2. They all made great progress throughout the morning.
They also played St. Thomas's this week securing a 7-1 win in a match played in great spirit.
What great resilience our cross-country team showed this week running at St. Bede's in
freezing temperatures! Both boys and girls did really well with  1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th
for Thomas, Bo, Fin and Freddie and a 4th for Aoife. They all made a fantastic effort.
Good luck to all of our biathletes who are competing at Crystal Palace on Sunday (if the snow doesn't catch up with us!)
Lunch Cheques – These will not be processed unless you have your child’s name and class on the back of the cheque. Thank you.
Just in case the grit salt lorry doesn't manage to come down Addison Road in time and there is lying snow on our roadways you may like to know that the Charlotteville Snow Team is firmly established and gritsalt has been distributed evenly throughout Charlotteville, the grit spreader is ready to spring into action and there should be a clear WALKING route from Harvey Road to both schools (download here) ready for Monday Morning. To follow the snow team's progress parents can twitter on @jubileetrust. If there are any parent volunteers willing to come and help on Sunday (if it snows) then could they please contact Gina on 598420.
The library system has now gone online and can be accessed from home. You can see what books your child has out and what they have borrowed in the past. There are lots of new features, some of which I am still playing with. I am gradually showing everyone how it works.  Children can log on by putting their library number into both the Username and Password boxes. If they want to find out what their number is they can either ask me or look in the yellow file on my desk which is arranged in class order. The link needed is: http://u005614.microlibrarian.net.
