No. 205

18 December 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

In my final letter to you all this Christmastime, I want to say thank you.

Firstly, to the staff across the school. What a team! They have taken on every Covid-adjustment with amazing fortitude and a smile – they continue to go the extra mile at every turn, and they are such a creative, flexible and fearless bunch! We’ve said goodbye this week to two of our longest serving colleagues, both taking retirement and looking forward to spending more time with their families. Gillian Trumble has been a teacher across both sites for nearly 20 years and inspired generations of children with her love of Scottish country dancing, her music making, and her gentle spirit. And Carol Hammond Smith will leave a big hole at Holy Trinity; her support especially in the teaching of maths and her unwavering kindness will be hard to replace! We wish them both well.

Huge thanks also to our HTPD families. We have been overwhelmed by your gratitude. It’s made such a difference to know that you appreciate our efforts this term. We are so grateful for your kind words, your Christmas gifts and your constant encouragement. We also really appreciate how well everyone has cooperated and been so flexible following all our instructions, adjustments and timetables. Like you, we’re sad not to be able to run school as we’d like to, with fewer clubs, less mixing between year groups, and careful timetabling, but we thank you so much for your patient understanding. All of these arrangements will continue next term until things settle down. Thank you for sticking to the staggered start and finish times, for leaving the school sites promptly and for bearing with us!

Then finally, thanks to the children who have continued to impress me with their daily optimism, resilience, cheerfulness and energy. They have been such a wonderful distraction this term and I’m lucky to work with all 551 of them!

Please do keep in touch regarding any positive Covid test results over the next few days. Please email me ( if any child who has been in school becomes unwell in the next 48 hours, and then tests positive. The government has requested that headteachers continue to inform close contacts of any infections; I would send a parentmail to notify any class of either a child or member of staff from that bubble becoming symptomatic in the next 48 hours and then testing positive.

With news that secondary schools are facing a staggered return after the break, we are glad that it looks like we’ll be starting back for the spring term as planned on Tuesday 5th January after a staff training day the day before. Whilst next term is likely to need determination and continued vigilance, with a renewed focus on our adjustments to keep everyone safe, I’m hopeful that soon in 2021 we’ll see a more straightforward time for schools! That’s something to look forward to!

For our Christmas service this week, we were reminded of the angels singing over the hills of Bethlehem on that first Christmas night, bringing news of great joy and goodwill to all people. I’m hopeful that as a school community, we continue to hear that same message, and that the light of God’s love will continue to shine in the darkness. I pray that you all have a happy and healthy Christmas and that you find joy in the light and love of this wonderful story.

Happy Christmas and see you in the New Year!

With love,

Thought of the Week: “Find the true meaning of Christmas” Jesus – the ultimate hero!
