15 December 2017

Dear Parents,

What a fantastic week it’s been! I’ve really enjoyed seeing the children at both the infants and the juniors performing their Christmas shows. There were so many children who surpassed expectations and who stole the show with their remarkable stage presence. How lovely to see children’s self-confidence grow and the pleasure that they gained from creating something so enjoyable. I’m sure you’ll agree, the applause was well earned! I was also delighted to see how much money we will be able to donate to Shooting Star Chase – once expenses have been covered, it looks like we will be able to give over £1,600 away this year! Thank you for your generosity.

Today’s optional late start gave some a much needed rest, but those who arrived on time at the juniors were treated to our annual “late start assembly” with Christmas stories, songs, and readings accompanied by teachers treating children to a hilarious re-enactment of Jesus’ Christmas party, Dr Seuss’ Grinch, Good King Wenceslas and a very amusing building of some snowmen.

Next week, we will be walking to St Mary’s (for the infants carol service on Tuesday morning) and Holy Trinity Church (for the juniors on Wednesday afternoon). Do join us if you’d like to share in our Christmas celebrations. We will be ending a term of thinking about “both sides of a story” by considering the mystery of the incarnation, where King Jesus, God’s son, was born in poverty in a manger. I’m hoping we’ll all experience the wonder of “God with us” at Christmas time.

We’d love to invite our parent helpers into school for a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine as a small token of our gratitude to the team of people who have made such a difference this term. At Pewley this will take place on Tuesday straight after returning from St Mary’s and at the juniors it will be at Wednesday lunchtime, just before we set off to Holy Trinity church. Please let your child’s class teacher or the office staff know if you are planning to come.

And then finally, next Thursday we will come to the end of a super term. I do hope you enjoy your Christmas celebrations!

With best wishes, Clare

Thank you so much to everyone who supported the school by coming along to our Christmas Fair on Sunday. We really hope you and your children enjoyed the afternoon.

We would particularly like to thank all of you who came and helped, whether taking a turn (or two or three!) on a stall, helping set-up, tidying up afterwards or fetching, folding tickets, carrying and wrapping in the weeks before! We were overwhelmed with all the offers of help and it was fabulous to have so many of you there on Friday evening and Saturday. This could not happen without you.

Thanks especially to all the class reps for cajoling everyone, taking on the sticking duties, organising the rotas and helping every step of the way.

We are still waiting for a final few costs to come but we hope to be able to give you the total raised very soon!

Congratulations to the winners of the raffle and silent auction. See the separate ParentMail for details.

08 December 2017

Dear parents

I hope you’re looking forward to next week as much as I am! All the rehearsals are over and play week is around the corner. We are so looking forward to welcoming you to enjoy the performances of Baubles and Lion King. This year, once we have covered the costs, we will be raising money for Shooting Star Chase. This amazing organisation provides respite care for families of children who have life-limiting conditions to contend with and we have experienced first-hand how much support our local hospice gives. The children here are keen to sing, dance, act and smile their way into encouraging your generosity – so thank you in advance for coming ready to give!

Because next week is often so tiring for the children, we would ask you to consider making their week as restful as possible. Teacher-led clubs at the juniors will still be running, but we would encourage you to arrange to pick them up at 3.15pm if you can so that they can enjoy a rest before the evening performances.

On Friday morning we have an optional late start. The children can come into school anytime up to 10.30am. At the juniors, they should come straight into the hall for a candle-lit Christmas assembly, and at the infants they can go to their classrooms as usual. It allows for a bit of a lie-in for any children who are worn out after a week of being on stage!

With the infant school Christmas fair on Sunday, I’m sure I’ll see many of you over the weekend. Thank you so much for your generous support of both FOPS and HTSC events. We were so pleased with the amount raised last Friday night at the HT fair, and I’m sure Sunday will also be a great occasion. If you missed the “Christmas Tree of Wishes” for maths equipment, ask Tom about it at the Lion King performances. We’re looking forward to equipping all of our KS2 classrooms with great maths resources – and we can’t do it without your support. Thank you so much!

Finally, a reminder that we will be enjoying Christmas dinner at both sites next week (Thurs at the infants and Friday at the juniors). If your children are not having a school lunch, they might like to have a festive theme to their packed lunch…and they’d all be welcome to wear a Christmas hat, jumper or sprig of tinsel too!

With best wishes
Clare

01 December 2017

Dear parents

With the Christmas fair happening tonight, and with the first of December arriving, I can officially celebrate with you the start of Advent. The children are working hard to rehearse the Christmas plays at both sites and the schools are starting to look festive! Do make sure you arrange tickets to come along to our productions. They’re sure to be really fun! Advent is a favourite season of mine – I enjoy the “looking forward to” almost as much as the actual festival of Christmas. We will be marking the Advent season in assemblies by lighting candles on an Advent wreath with each candle representing different aspects of the Christmas story – we start on Monday with hope. This follows this past week when we have reminded the children of the hope that comes after forgiveness.

During Advent we will be attempting to twin our remaining toilets! It’s a good time to remember that there are many people in the world not as fortunate as us. Those of you that were here last year will remember that our Advent charity supported an amazing charity which raises funds to build toilets in the developing world by “twinning” toilets in this country. We raised an amazing amount last year, but we do still have a way to go! Do take a look at the website, www.toilettwinning.org and send donations into either office. The children may also like to think of ways to raise money at home by helping out around the house, organising a cake sale for friends and neighbours or raiding their piggy banks. Every penny will make a real difference. I’ll keep you posted about how close we are to twinning the last remaining toilets!

It’s great to see how much the children are enjoying their topics. Year 5 today are enjoying Tudor day, with jesters, musicians, artists and cooks preparing a banquet for Queen Elizabeth 1. These special days make the learning throughout the term really purposeful and the children’s subject knowledge about different aspects of the national curriculum is really impressive. Do ask your child what they know now that they didn’t know at the start of the term. Throughout the school, children have become real experts, whether it’s Viking life in early Britain, toys through the ages, or the challenge of preserving the natural splendour of Antarctica. We’re so proud of all that they have learned.

Hope to see you at the junior school fair tonight.

With best wishes
Clare

Christmas Play Tickets
This is a reminder to all parents who have not submitted forms for play tickets. Please get your forms with an envelope with child's name and class (for return of tickets) as soon as possible. To make life a bit easier I have left some hard copies of the form with some envelopes and a pen on the Office counter so that you can fill them in during the fair this evening. There will be a labelled box to put the forms into. I will collect over the weekend. For those waiting for spare tickets I will issue these on Thursday next week.

Creative Writing
The time of Christmas parties is drawing near. As we are a huge group I am going to split the club in two for the last weeks of term. Next week there is a session for children in Nightingale and Shackleton during which we will have a “bring and share” party. The theme will be any Christmas story. This will be the last session of the term. For children in Keller and Mandella their party will be the following week (play week). To participate in these sessions you will need to have been turning up regularly this term.
Because of the large numbers attending Creative Writing I am dividing the club next term. For the first half term Creative Writing will be only for Years 3 and 4. After half term only years 5 and 6 will be allowed. If there are siblings who would be split by this then you can choose which half you want both to come to, so that they can stay together; but they can only do one.

CHRISTMAS FAIR – SUNDAY 10 DECEMBER (1-3pm) Come and join the fun! There is only just over a week to go until our Christmas Fair. It’s a very busy time and we would really love your help, your time or just you! You will have received a lot of information over the past week or so – here’s a summary!

Stuff for stalls MONDAY 4th December – as outlined in the letter sent out this week please bring in plenty of bottles, booty bags, chocolate, soft toys, books, DVDs and toys. There will be boxes outside the front playground doors to leave these in. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Raffle! There are some FABULOUS prizes to win from an Apple Watch to family panto tickets, meals, days out, toys and more… Look out for how to bid for some extra special prizes on a silent auction coming soon. As there was a mix-up with the distribution, do make sure you have tickets and, if not, please pick some up from the office. Please sell as many as you can and send back in the envelope provided with money and the counterfoils plus any unsold tickets by Friday 8th December.

Fun family photography – our photographer will be taking professional festive family shots at the fair. Book your slot today! See the flyer circulated earlier in the week for booking information or pick one up at the office.

Help on the day and setting up – if you haven’t already signed up for a slot, please consider doing so as it is an enormous help. Your class reps have sent information. Or come along to set-up Friday 8 December (7pm until 9.30pm) or Saturday 9 December (2pm until 4.30pm). We will also need people to help clear away on Sunday 10th from 3pm.

First aider?
We are looking for two or three qualified first-aiders to be on a first-aid rota at the fair. This doesn’t mean you can’t join in the fun, it simply means we need to be able to contact you by telephone should someone need first-aid. Please let us know if you can help.

Shredded paper – thanks to everyone who has donated so far but we need more! You’ll see why at the fair. If you have any you need to get rid of please bring it to the school office.

Can your company or business help? Some larger companies will match funds made by employees who give their time at community events. This means that if you help out on one of our stalls, the company could match the funds raised by that stall! If you think your organisation might do this please mail Laura: laurasabster@yahoo.co.uk

Shopping online this Christmas? Did you know that when you shop with big online companies including Amazon, a percentage of the money you spend can come to the school at no extra cost to you!!
Just sign up to Easy Fundraising (it’s free) and choose Friends of Pewley Down Infant School as your chosen cause. It’s one of the quickest and easiest ways of raising funds for the school and costs us nothing! www.easyfundraising.org.uk
