Junior 24/4/15

24 April 2015

Dear Parents,

Child development is so interesting and I am sure you enjoy watching your children grow and particularly note the difference between each one. I am now enjoying it for the second time around with my grandchildren. My daughter Johanna’s daughters are just so different both physically and mentally; Isla (4) is petite, precise, organised, likes plans and all things pink, Lois (2) is large framed, random, takes life as it comes and copies everything Isla does. Rather surprisingly they both share their father’s love of maths. It’s a great reminder that we are all unique and equally treasured and loved by God.

At HTPD we have 564 children and almost 100 staff and it is our duty and joy to care for and nurture each other. The staff take this responsibility very seriously seeking to really get to know the children in their direct care and meeting their needs. Children must be treated and educated as individuals if they are to succeed and thrive. They learn in different ways, make progress at different rates and have different attitudes to success and failure. It is hard to achieve this at times in a culture which seeks for everyone to achieve the same things and works on a tick box, target driven mentality.

Perhaps when you’re deciding who to vote for at this election you might like to consider the parties attitudes to education. Let’s see if any of them talk about the needs of the individual and have any real understanding of how children learn and develop. In the meantime we will continue to personalise learning wherever we can and continue to remind each individual how precious they are.

With best wishes, Richard

Congratulations to the year 6 netball team who became High 5 County champions at the tournament in Chertsey this week. The teamwork and the support which they gave each other was outstanding. It was a very enjoyable and well deserved win.
Good luck to both year 5 and 6 teams playing in the Tormead Versatility Tournament tomorrow.

Huge thanks to all of our year 6 parents for helping with lifts to Airhop for our Friday afternoon PE session. Each class is doing two weeks, so please do look out for the letters coming home if your child's class has not already participated.

Surrey Youth Games
Each year the Surrey Youth Games provides a fantastic opportunity for free coaching across a wide range of different sports. Most sessions have already started but do check the Active Surrey website for more details or check out Guildford.gov.uk/syg. They are still looking for new players for the girls cricket. Surrey Youth Games training is held at Sutherland Memorial Park on Fridays from 24th April to 19th June, 6-7.30pm (years 4, 5 and 6).

PUPS+ will be running in for May half term from 26 - 29 May, provided we have sufficient interest. If you wish to send your child to PUPS+, please could you download the form from the website and return it to Sam Andrews at Pewley as soon as possible. In order to secure your booking, please note that we do need to have payment included with the booking form (or tick that you will pay by vouchers so that we can watch out for them). Although PUPS+ will officially run to 5 pm, we will be able to arrange a later collection if we are notified in advance so that we can arrange staffing, for an additional payment. Please could you register interest by 1st May as a decision will be made on the 6th May.

HT @ Home - extended
Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm for HT @ Home already! Many of us socialise with people we've met via this school, with the friends we make in the class room and at the school gate. In recognition of this, HTSC are encouraging us to arrange lots of socials (which we do anyway). The difference is that, under the HT @ Home umbrella, we can now turn these into mini HT fundraisers by asking guests to make a donation to school via the new online page.

Some lovely events are bubbling away in support of our efforts to raise £5,000 for an overhaul of student computers at HT. To reach our target, it would be wonderful to see more HT@Home events in the coming weeks and months. Please think about how you might be able to raise a little cash for this important venture - could you host a Pimms evening for your HT friends, or a dinner party, or a girl's pamper night? If you have any queries, or simply wish to chat through an idea, please contact nataliesavage@me.com.

Please keep checking our designated online fundraising page to see how our fundraising efforts are going against target. Our children might be interested to see the page too, for every penny raised will go to improving computers at school. https://mydonate.bt.com/events/htathome/208773
