Junior 17/4/2015

17 April 2015

Dear parents

I wonder what makes you really happy? It’s a new term and we have a new assembly series. This series is all about rubbish and recycling. So Mr Recycle Man ( a.k.a. Nick) will join us each Monday to discuss something which we can use again or use in new and exciting ways. This week we also started looking at the life of St. Paul and Bible book of Acts. Near the start of the book the disciples were filled with Holy Spirit and began spreading the happiness and good news about Jesus. So our main theme has been Light and flame and we too are seeking to share happiness and joy within our school family.
The Daily Mail published a list of the top 50 things which make you feel great. Here is a link to the article.

I wonder which of these particularly appeals to you - the smell of freshly made bread or rainbows, chocolate melting in your mouth or remembering something you had forgotten?

As I visit other Schools in Surrey from time to time, I am very quickly aware of the difference in happiness levels – it is immediately apparent from the welcome, to the children, to the care and respect which are shown. At HTPD we actively seek for children to be happy so that they can thrive and enjoy school. Enjoyment leads to children keen to come to school and to actively engage in their learning.

I do hope you have a very happy weekend.

With best wishes, Richard

LSB University Study

Your child will be bringing home an information letter and permission form relating to a PhD study being conducted by Genevieve Waterhouse. Richard fully endorses this study and would appreciate your support for Genevieve.

Please make a note for your diaries that there will be an additional half day INSET for all staff on Friday 19 June. Pewley Down will close at 1200 and Holy Trinity at 1215. There will be no clubs, Clubs+ or PUPS on this day.

Richard’s Retirement - Save the Date
Wednesday 15 July – picnic lunch on the Downs for all current pupils and parents
Friday 17 July – party at Holy Trinity School – 7pm to 9pm

Traffic in Cline Road
We would like to remind all members of our school community that, to ensure the safety of our children and the continuing goodwill of our neighbours, it is essential that drivers do not park on the double yellow lines before the school gates nor park in the turning area. We would also request in line with ethos of our school that drivers extend courtesy and patience towards other road users at the busy drop-off and pick-up times.

Lunch discount
Don’t forget to avail yourselves again (or for the first time perhaps) of the termly discounts for school lunches. If you pay for the full summer term by 30 April, the discount price is £2.35 per meal, not the full £2.40. The termly amount payable differs slightly by year group to take account of days out, so consult the lunch price chart on the school website Payment page. After 30 April, we uprate discount payments to the full meal price on ParentPay. Lunch credits are only used when meals are actually taken, so you really can’t lose. Leavers will have any credit refunded. Thanks, Lesley.

Tag Rugby

We had a fantastic afternoon up at the SSP on Wednesday afternoon for the County Tag Rugby Final. It was a great competition, hotly contested by 26 teams from across Surrey and the standard of play was really good throughout. After winning their group in four tight matches, the Holy Trinity team went through to the semi-finals, which they won. In a nail biting final with end-to-end play the score went to the other team 4-3 and our team came away with lovely silver medals. Well done to all of the boys and girls involved.

Having introduced lacrosse as a PE option for all of our year 5 and 6 children last term we had a lovely opportunity to enter the County Final on the same afternoon. Given that the children had only been playing for such a short time, it was just amazing to see the progress they have made. It was a lot of fun and all of the girls and boys involved enjoyed
the competition.

Apologies that we have not been able to deliver all of our sports clubs the first week back due to alternative commitments. We look forward to a term full of summer sports. There will be no Year 5 netball on Tuesday due to a fixture.

HT @ Home - extended
Thank you so much for all your enthusiasm for HT @ Home already! Many of us socialise with people we've met via this school, with the friends we make in the class room and at the school gate. In recognition of this, HTSC are encouraging us to arrange lots of socials (which we do anyway). The difference is that, under the HT @ Home umbrella, we can now turn these into mini HT fundraisers by asking guests to make a donation to school via the new online page.

Some lovely events are bubbling away in support of our efforts to raise £5,000 for an overhaul of student computers at HT. On average, the events are raising £50 a time (kite flying, Easter walk, film nights @ home, and a Guildford Treasure Hunt). To reach our target, it would be wonderful to see more HT@Home events in the coming weeks and months. Please think about how you might be able to raise a little cash for this important venture - could you host a Pimms evening for your HT friends, or a dinner party, or a girl's pamper night? If you have any queries, or simply wish to chat through an idea, please contact nataliesavage@me.com.

Please keep checking our designated online fundraising page to see how our fundraising efforts are going against target. Our children might be interested to see the page too, for every penny raised will go to improving computers at school. mydonate.bt.com/events/htathome/208773
