Infant 4/4/14

04 April 2014

Dear Parents,

Firstly, I would like to let you know that one of our parents, Helen Learoyd, who was the mother of Emma (Year 1), Heather (Year 3), and Daniel (Year 6), died on the 23 March. We do extend our heartfelt sympathy and love to the children, to Kevin her husband, and the wider family. Many parents were present at a celebration and burial at the Clandon Natural Burial site last Monday. I know all of you will want to be supporting this lovely family as is appropriate.

This has been a hardworking and productive term for all of us, the children have continued to make great progress and enjoy learning. Schools never stand still and we continue to move forward, never resting on our laurels or becoming complacent.

This has been a particularly busy and exciting week. We have appointed two new teachers; Jessica Newman (who was previously a maths TA here) and Julia Blackstock (JJ) who joins us from Exeter University with science and sport as her specialisms. They will be replacing Mel Burgess and Henry Vincent who are moving on in July. There will be an opportunity to thank them properly and give more details of their future activities later during the term.

We are excited that our stained glass windows for the Chapel are now nearly finished and they are going to be a wonderful inspiration for all of us. Stained glass fever has broken out at Holy Trinity with the group of outstanding artists giving their designs for the windows and with Year 3 producing special Easter stained glass windows as well. In the penultimate week of next term we hope to have the official opening of the Chapel with the windows installed and some inscriptions on the walls as well as the list of subscribers to build the Chapel. This will be a great school day with Year 2 joining the juniors and parents and friends for the opening service and later that day, Year 1 and Year R having their own special service when they can see exactly what the new building is all about.

The whole school met together yesterday in one of our rare meetings. This was at Holy Trinity Church for our Easter service. It was a great celebration of the Christian hope of sins forgiven and new life in Christ. Each year group from Year 2 – Year 6 contributed in a moving way from what they had been learning about Easter in their RE lessons. Particularly moving to me was Year 2’s interpretation of the burdens of worry, pain, fear and sadness. When they laid these burdens down at the foot of the Cross and turned round, these words changed to say Love. It is the sacrifice and love of Jesus that brings hope to us all at Easter.

Some parents have asked us for resource material to help explain bereavement and loss to their children. We have found that the information on a website called Winston’s Wish to be particularly helpful, a short book called Waterbugs and Dragonflies gives an excellent picture of death, separation and new life (this was read at Helen’s ceremony). I would also encourage you all to talk about the Christian hope that we have and it may be a great time to hear about this by visiting your local church for a family service on Easter Day. Can I wish you a very happy Easter holidays and look forward to seeing you again on Tuesday, 22nd April.

I am also enclosing in this Newsletter an update on our progress since the Ofsted report last May - download here.

With best wishes, Richard

Year 1

Children in Year 1 should come to school on Tuesday 22 April (the first day back) dressed as a gardener eg wearing jeans, trainers/wellies and an old top and bring in a raincoat. They will be spending the day outside exploring, gardening and using maps.

Year 2
Chestnut and Walnut classes will be going to the Wild Place on Tuesday afternoon (22 April) and will need to bring wellies or trainers. Also a reminder that PE and swimming will revert back to a Wednesday after Easter.

Easter Egg Hunt
The children had a wonderful time searching for Easter Eggs this morning. Thanks to FOPS for organising this as well as the kind Easter Bunny helpers.

Note from Clare Brunet:
I have really enjoyed my first few weeks at Pewley Down getting to know the children and staff. Parents have also been quick to introduce themselves and make me feel very welcome. We are looking forward to hearing news from Nicola soon!

Leaflets about Surrey Arts music lessons went home earlier in the week. Charlotte, who comes in to teach violin, does have some spaces for the summer term.

Donated clothing should be in a wearable condition as the it is mostly shipped to African countries where a wholesaler sorts them and sells them to market traders at affordable prices. The school receives money for every kilo donated. If you would like more information about what can be collected or where the donated clothing goes, please see http://www.philthebag.co.uk/faq.html.
